Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to request you to change my work schedule because I want to work part-time for next 6 months. As I am planning to pursue an advanced diploma in digital marketing, I would not be able to work full-time during my course.

Although it is a part-time course, I can only be available for 24 hours since my classes will take place from 9 am to 6 pm from Monday to Thursday. I have adjusted my school schedule in such a way that I can continue working on the busy days because I understand that our company requires adequate number of people on weekends.

I am confident that I can contribute more to company's success once I finish this course. If you could allow, I will take additional responsibilities related to the organisation's social media accounts for online advertisement and digital presence. Being a small scale company, this may have a significant positive impact on our overall profits as it will save the cost of hiring other professionals for doing this work every month.

Looking forward to a favourable response from you.

Yours faithfully,

Jashanpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the reason for the request (pursuing a digital marketing diploma), specified the desired working hours (24 hours per week), and provided a persuasive argument regarding how the employer would benefit from your new skills. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, showing a good understanding of the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the specific hours requested are clearly defined, as '24 hours' is a quantity rather than a schedule.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'As', and 'If you could allow' to link ideas effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the request to the justification and finally the benefits. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is coherent throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context, such as 'pursue', 'adequate', 'significant positive impact', and 'favourable response'. The word choice is generally accurate and conveys your meaning clearly. There are no significant spelling errors. To improve further, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic professional expressions to show greater flexibility. For example, instead of 'small scale company', you could use 'small-to-medium enterprise' or 'boutique firm' to enhance the professional tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over grammar is strong. There are minor slips, such as 'contribute more to company's success' (missing the article 'the') and 'hiring other professionals for doing this work' (a slightly awkward phrasing; 'to do' would be more natural). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Your use of conditional structures ('If you could allow...') is well-handled and appropriate for the formal request.
