Student answer (Band 6.5)
Hi,
I hope you are doing well. I would like to request you to convert my full time job into part time. I am planning to do project management program in Conestoga college. This program will help me to understand project management methodologies. I have decided to study this program because it is very challenging to understand some quality and risk management matrix in my work. Therefore, I have decided to pursue this program to overcome from the challenges.
My classes are scheduled in the morning so i can work in the afternoon shift. would you please allow me to work from 4.30 to 8.30 pm during weekdays in evening? I believe it would not be concerned as our company operate 24 hours for 6 days. Furthermore, I believe my study will be helpful for the company in long term as i would be able to face a new challenges in future. This certificate allow me to work me on managerial position in future. I am looking forward to hearing from you for approval.
Thank you
Kind regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained the reason for the request (pursuing a project management program), specified the desired hours (4:30 to 8:30 pm), and described the benefits to the employer. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a boss. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of how the studies benefit the employer is a bit repetitive and could be more specific regarding how the skills will be applied to your current role. Overall, the response is clear and fulfills the requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized logically, with a clear introduction, body, and closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Furthermore', and 'I believe', which help the flow of ideas. However, the paragraphing is not fully utilized; the entire body of the letter is presented as one block, which makes it harder to read. To improve, you should separate the request, the explanation of hours, and the benefits into distinct paragraphs. Additionally, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, but the overall progression of ideas remains clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'methodologies', 'pursue', and 'managerial position'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'overcome from the challenges' (should be 'overcome the challenges') and 'it would not be concerned' (should be 'it would not be a concern'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common collocations. Expanding your vocabulary to include more professional business-related terms would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('do project management program'), subject-verb agreement issues ('This certificate allow me'), and punctuation errors (e.g., 'i' should be capitalized). Additionally, the phrase 'I would like to request you to convert' is slightly awkward; 'I would like to request a change to my working hours' would be more natural. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your message.
