IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You would like to reduce your working hours in order to study part time.

Write a letter to your boss. In your letter

  • explain why you want to reduce your working hours
  • say which hours you would like to work
  • describe how your part-time studies would benefit your employer

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Joshi,

I am writing to formally request a reduction in my working hours from full-time to part-time, starting from next month.

The reason for this adjustment is that I have been accepted into a part-time professional diploma program in Data Analytics at a local collage. Because classes are held during regular weekday afternoons, so I need to reduce my hours to attend all the lecture and study properly.

I would like to work three days a week- Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday from 9:00AM to 5:00PM. This scheduled give me 24 working hours every week while keeping my Thursdays and Fridays open for my classes.

I believe this course will also benefit our company. The data skills I learn will help me improve our weekly sales reports and make our team work faster and more efficiently.

Thank you for considering my request. I would be happy to talk more about this in person.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (a Data Analytics diploma), specify the desired working hours (Monday to Wednesday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM), and provide a logical benefit to the employer regarding improved reporting and efficiency. The tone is professional and appropriate for a formal request to a manager. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the request to the justification, the specific schedule, and finally the benefits. Cohesive devices such as 'The reason for this adjustment is', 'Because', and 'I believe' are used effectively to link ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the flow of information is smooth, making the letter easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context, such as 'formally request', 'adjustment', 'professional diploma', and 'efficiently'. There is one minor spelling error ('collage' instead of 'college'), but this does not impede communication. The vocabulary is sufficiently precise to convey your intentions clearly. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or slightly more varied professional terminology, but the current range is more than adequate for this task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the majority of sentences are accurate, there are a few minor grammatical slips. For example, the sentence 'Because classes are held... so I need to' is redundant; you should use either 'Because' or 'so', but not both. Additionally, 'This scheduled give me' should be 'This schedule gives me'. Despite these occasional errors, your meaning is always clear, and the control of grammar is generally strong.
