Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Rahul,

I am writing this letter to make reduction in my working hours because I start part-time course. From October 1st, I will enroll in bussniess management course. In order to give time to my education, I need to reduce my working hours. I think you can understand my concern.

I have classes in the morning from Monday to thursday. But, i would like to work in evenings during weekends only. However, on rest of days, i would like to make my notes and assignments. So, on weekends i can only concentrate on works without thinking about my studies. It will affects the work environment positively.

On the other hand, this course will help the company as well. During my studies, I can get information about the strategies of doing increasing sales. Moreover, we will learn about the time management in work area.

I will look forward for positive response from you.

Yours faithful

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state the reason for the request (enrolling in a business management course), specify the desired working hours (evenings on weekends), and explain the benefits to the employer (sales strategies and time management). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of how your studies will benefit the company is quite brief. To improve, you could provide more specific examples of how the skills learned in your course would be applied to your current role to make the argument more persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In order to', 'However', and 'Moreover' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by mechanical transitions. For example, the transition between your study schedule and your work availability is a bit abrupt. Additionally, the use of 'On the other hand' to introduce the benefits to the employer is slightly misused, as this phrase is typically used to present a contrasting point rather than an additional one. Improving the variety and accuracy of your linking words would enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enroll', 'strategies', and 'positively'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'bussniess' and 'thursday' (which should be capitalized), and minor word choice issues, such as 'make reduction' instead of 'request a reduction' and 'work area' instead of 'workplace'. While these errors do not impede communication, they do limit the precision of your writing. To reach a higher band, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of professional terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('a business management course'), subject-verb agreement issues ('It will affects' should be 'It will affect'), and punctuation errors (e.g., 'i' should always be capitalized). Additionally, the phrase 'I will look forward for' is incorrect; the standard collocation is 'I look forward to'. While your meaning is clear, the frequency of these small errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
