Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Singh,

I am writing to request you to shorten my hours of work because I am going to engage in a Marketing course for a short period of time.

As per my course requirements, I need to attend classes everyday on weekdays for three months due to which I have to minimise my working hours. This will allow me to concentrate on my studies and lower the chances of stress to manage both things at one time.

It would be really appreciated if you could offer me the evening shift to handle the sales duties because I will join the morning classes so that I can complete all my tasks for the day. This would help me to continue my job efficiently along with my course.

In terms of business, the studies I am taking would be beneficial. As a sales person, having better marketing skills is essential, so once I learned the techniques and strategies I will utilise in our business to increase the sales rate.

Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to hearing from you a positive response.

Yours sincerely,

Amrit kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the reason for the request (a Marketing course), specified the desired shift (evening), and articulated the benefits to your employer (applying new techniques to increase sales). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands both your personal needs and the professional value you bring. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your studies and the specific business needs is even more explicitly linked to show a deeper level of professional engagement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the request, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'As per my course requirements' and 'In terms of business' to transition between ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall progression of the letter is clear and easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'minimise', 'efficiently', and 'strategies'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'manage both things at one time' (better: 'balance both commitments') and 'I look forward to hearing from you a positive response' (better: 'I look forward to receiving a positive response'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise professional terminology would elevate the quality of your writing and demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, though there are occasional grammatical slips, such as 'I am writing to request you to shorten' (better: 'I am writing to request a reduction in my working hours') and 'once I learned the techniques' (should be 'once I have learned'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do highlight a need for more consistent control over verb tenses and sentence construction. Increasing the variety of complex structures would further improve your score.
