Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear jimmy,
I want to discuss about my working hours as I can’t continue to working full time. The main reason is I pursue part time studies in Human Resources management from next week.
My classes will start in the evening at 4pm and ends around 8pm from Monday to Thursday.
I am available full day from Friday to Sunday as well as in rest the days before 3pm because I need some time to prepare for my classes. I hope you will get a solution on this.
My this course will definitely help in your organization as am working in recruiting team. By studying this course am able to help the other duties such as making payroll's and other HR related duties. Please consider my situation and reduce my working hours from full time to part time as discussed. I will appreciate your decision. Please let me know what else I can do to give my best.
Regards,
Ranjodh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (part-time studies), specify the desired working hours, and describe the benefits to your employer. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of how your studies benefit the employer is a bit vague. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples of how your new skills in Human Resources management would directly improve your current performance or contribute to the company's efficiency.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your request. There is a clear progression from the purpose of the letter to the specific details and the final request. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and occasionally repetitive. For example, the transition between sentences could be smoother; phrases like 'My this course' and 'By studying this course' are slightly mechanical. Using a wider variety of linking words or referencing pronouns would improve the flow and make the connection between your studies and your work duties more explicit.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use relevant terms such as 'Human Resources management', 'recruiting team', and 'payroll'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I pursue part time studies' (should be 'I am pursuing') and 'help the other duties' (should be 'assist with other duties'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring that verbs and nouns are paired correctly in a professional context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I can’t continue to working' (should be 'continue working'), 'rest the days' (should be 'the rest of the days'), and 'My this course' (should be 'This course'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your request, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of the writing. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help improve your score.
