Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I write to inform you with the intent of expressing my grave concern regarding my working hours. Few months back I tried to get admission in Masters of Business Administration, but at that time there were no seats left for the course registration. Last week I got call from the college that my admission is confirmed for upcoming semester starting next month. Due my classes on weekdays I will be only available to work on weekends.

In addition to this, I will be working just 24 hours in a week. I know it's little difficult to provide training to new employee from beginning. But , I assure you I will try my best to train the new applicant as soon as and will make sure that he or she gives his best performance.

Moreover, I want to let you that once my master's will be competed I will be able to manage our company's account and book keeping things very well. So, I request you to reduce my working hours. Looking forward to your positive response.

Yours faithfully

Evaan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained the reason for the request (MBA studies), specified the desired hours (weekends only, 24 hours per week), and described the benefit to the employer (managing accounts and bookkeeping). However, the tone is slightly inconsistent; the opening phrase 'expressing my grave concern' is overly dramatic and inappropriate for a professional request to a boss. The development of ideas is generally clear, though the transition between the study plans and the offer to train a replacement could be more professional. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this' and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing, such as the sudden shift to discussing training a new employee. The paragraphing is sufficient, but the logical progression could be smoother. Some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'book keeping things', which sounds informal and lacks a clear connection to the previous sentence structure. Overall, the letter is easy to follow, but the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, but there are several instances of unnatural collocation and word choice. For example, 'I write to inform you with the intent of expressing my grave concern' is unnecessarily wordy and uses 'grave concern' incorrectly in this context. Phrases like 'book keeping things' and 'make sure that he or she gives his best performance' are informal and imprecise. While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary lacks the precision and professional tone expected at higher bands. Improving your grasp of business-appropriate collocations would significantly enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Few months back I tried to get admission in Masters', which is missing articles ('A few months ago', 'an MBA'). You also have errors in verb tense and preposition usage, such as 'once my master's will be competed' (should be 'is completed') and 'training to new employee' (missing article). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency of the writing. Focusing on article usage and subject-verb agreement will help improve your accuracy.
