Student answer (Band 6.5)

Hi,

I hope you are doing well. I would like to request you to convert my employment from full-time to part-time. I am working as a quality control specialist for SPX technologies from 2024 and now, I would like to upskill myself. Therefore, I have decided to study Project Management program.

My classes are scheduled in the morning so I would be able to work in afternoon shift. Since our company is running in two different shift, it wouldn't be problem. I will be available to work from 4.30 p.m to 10.30 p.m during the weekdays. It would be a great help if you accept my request.

My study would be benefited to the company in long term as I am willing to take more responsibilities and in case of any opening for the mangement arrived in future, I could sign up my name.

Please let me know if you are required any documentation from my side. I will be waiting for your approval. Thank you

Kind regads,

Vaibhav

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all three bullet points from the prompt effectively. The writer clearly explains the desire to upskill by studying a Project Management program, specifies the desired working hours (from 4.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. during weekdays), and describes how this will benefit the company in the long term through increased responsibilities and leadership availability. The tone is appropriately formal for a workplace letter, and the response meets the minimum length requirement easily. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, demonstrating a clear understanding of the task requirements. Consequently, the candidate achieves a solid Band 7.0 for this criterion as all parts of the prompt are fully and clearly addressed with adequate support.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter exhibits a clear overall structure with distinct paragraphs separating the introduction, the core request, the scheduling details, and the conclusion. Logical progression is evident as the writer transitions smoothly from the request to the reasons behind it, followed by the logistical details and future benefits. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Therefore', 'Since', and 'in case of', although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to organise distinct topics, contributing to a coherent arrangement that is easy to follow. Minor issues with referencing prevent a higher score, placing this performance securely at Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to incorporate less common workplace and academic terms such as 'upskill', 'quality control specialist', and 'responsibilities'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text. For instance, the phrase 'study Project Management program' lacks an article, 'study would be benefited to the company' uses incorrect voice and prepositional patterns (should be 'benefit the company'), and 'opening for the mangement arrived' contains unnatural phrasing and a spelling error ('mangement'). Despite these lexical slips, communication is never impeded, and the range is sufficient for the purpose, resulting in a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional and causal structures like 'Since our company is running in two different shift, it wouldn't be problem' and 'if you accept my request'. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, featuring several noticeable errors. These include article omission ('in afternoon shift'), pluralization errors ('two different shift'), missing auxiliary verbs ('you are required any documentation' instead of 'you require'), and prepositional inaccuracies. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the writing from reaching the Band 7 threshold. Therefore, a Band 6.0 is awarded.
