Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Manager,
I am writing this to request a working schedule with reduced hours so I could pursue a part time course that aligns with my job duties and would bring benefits to the organization.
Recently, I came across a part time Human Resources Management course that teaches about the integration of artificial intelligence with Human Resourses softwares to enhance efficiency and productivity in cost effective ways. I would like to pursue this course and bring in the knowledge gained from learning advanced techology to help our department and the organization; thus requesting to a 6 hours a day work schedule for next 8 weeks.
Given the current circumstances it would be very convenient if i could come to job at 8:00 am till 2:00 pm because my classes will commence at 3'o clock and I need at least 45 minutes to commute from work to the institute. My productivity will not take a hit due to reduced hours because I will be available to work from home after 5:00 pm in case of any emergency.
Kind regards,
Simarpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The candidate successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. First, the letter clearly explains why the reduction in working hours is desired, linking it to a specific Human Resources Management course focusing on artificial intelligence. Second, the student outlines the exact schedule requested (8:00 am to 2:00 pm for the next 8 weeks) to accommodate commute and class times. Finally, the response describes how the studies will benefit the organization by bringing in advanced technological knowledge, while also offering reassurance about productivity and emergency availability. The tone is appropriate for a workplace communication to a manager, and the purpose is clearly sustained throughout the letter. The ideas are well-developed and fulfil all task requirements effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, body paragraphs addressing separate aspects of the prompt, and a standard polite closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the main points, such as the course details and the specific hour requirements. Cohesive devices are employed adequately, for example, using 'Recently' to introduce the course and 'Given the current circumstances' to transition into the schedule discussion. Reference words are generally clear, though occasional mechanical transitions could be made smoother. Overall progression is easy to follow and the message is communicated clearly from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The candidate demonstrates a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary for a workplace request. Phrases such as 'integration of artificial intelligence', 'enhance efficiency and productivity', and 'cost effective ways' show an ability to use less common lexical items with good awareness of collocation in a professional context. There are some minor awkward phrasings, such as 'requesting to a 6 hours a day work schedule' instead of 'requesting a 6-hour-a-day work schedule', and 'come to job' instead of 'come to work', but these do not impede communication. Spelling and word choice are generally accurate enough to convey the intended meaning smoothly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and conditional elements (e.g., 'in case of any emergency'). There are several grammatical inaccuracies present, such as 'so I could pursue' lacking a main clause connection, 'techology' (minor typo), and 'i could come' with a lowercase pronoun. Furthermore, punctuation errors appear, including '3'o clock' instead of '3 o'clock' and missing commas around introductory phrases. Despite these recurring minor errors, the majority of sentences are clear, and the grammatical control is adequate to ensure that meaning is never obscured.
