Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir or madam

I am writing this letter to inform you that I want to shorten my working hours to divide my time for my part-time studies.

The main reason behind reducing my working hours is that I decided to join a part-time course to enhance my skills, and for that I have to pay attention, which could be only possibe if I work part- time

I want to work 6 hours a day, from 1 to 6 in the afternoon, as that would be the best time for me to manage my work and study, and it will help me achieve my targets.

Doing part-time studies will not only help me in building my career but it also beneficial for the company that I am working for by proving my worth and applying those practical skills at work

Thank you for considering my request .I hope to hearing from you soon,

Yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for reducing your working hours (to join a part-time course to enhance skills), state the specific hours you would like to work (6 hours a day, from 1 to 6 in the afternoon), and describe how this would benefit your employer (by proving your worth and applying practical skills at work). The tone is appropriately formal for a workplace letter, and the purpose is transparent from the beginning. Although the points are somewhat concise, they directly answer the prompt requirements and establish a clear position. Therefore, this fulfills the criteria for a solid band 6.5 to 7.0 range, comfortably achieving a band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure. Each paragraph addresses a specific aspect of the prompt, moving logically from the initial request to the reasons, the proposed schedule, and finally the employer benefits. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'The main reason behind' and 'Doing part-time studies will not only help', although referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is adequately handled, separating the introduction, body points, and sign-off clearly. There are minor punctuation slips in the closing, but overall the logical progression is maintained throughout, fitting the band 6.0 descriptors well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common phrases such as 'enhance my skills', 'manage my work and study', and 'building my career'. However, there are some word-choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as writing 'possibe' instead of 'possible' and an awkward phrasing in 'it also beneficial for the company'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching higher bands. To improve, focus on precise collocations and ensure careful proofreading for spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as the relative clause in 'the company that I am working for' and the conditional-like structure in 'which could be only possibe if I work part-time'. There are several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including missing capitalization, punctuation errors around the sign-off ('request .I hope'), and a run-on sentence structure in the final paragraph. Despite these errors, they rarely impede overall communication. The control over grammar is generally acceptable for a band 6.0.
