Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. Bodar,
I'm writing this letter to inform you about changing my availability from full time to part time as I have recently got an admission for my higher studies.
Since I will be studying part-time, my available hours to work at the stores are from the evening 5pm to midnight on weekdays and full day for weekends.
As you know its been 2 years since I have been working under your firm as a Provincial Insurance Advisor and it is very rewarding career too so I have decided to make it to the next level by getting a Federal licence by finishing my studies so I can contribute more to our firm and grow further. Secondly, we have already discussed about your vision to open a new branch, this would be a better opportunity for myself to work even harder so I can become the best candidate to manage the new location.
Thank you for the assistance in this matter.
Yours sincerely,
Sohilahamad Bodar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task prompt. First, the reason for reducing working hours is clearly explained as pursuing higher studies, noted in the phrase 'as I have recently got an admission for my higher studies.' Second, the desired working hours are specified: 'from the evening 5pm to midnight on weekdays and full day for weekends.' Third, the benefits to the employer are well articulated, connecting the pursuit of a Federal licence to contributing more to the firm and preparing to manage a new branch. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a boss. Overall, all parts of the task are well-addressed with relevant ideas, earning a solid band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The opening greets the recipient appropriately, the body paragraphs flow naturally from explaining the personal goal to detailing the working hours and finally highlighting the mutual benefits for the company, and the closing is polite and standard. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Secondly' to introduce an additional point. Paragraphing is logical, separating the introduction, the core explanation, and the concluding sign-off cleanly. Referencing is generally clear, though paragraphing could have been slightly expanded to separate the hours from the reasons more distinctly. Still, overall progression is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The candidate demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms relevant to a professional context, such as 'availability', 'Provincial Insurance Advisor', and 'Federal licence'. There are some minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward collocations, such as 'got an admission' (instead of 'received admission' or 'been accepted'), 'working under your firm' (better as 'working with your firm' or 'for your firm'), and 'make it to the next level'. However, these vocabulary errors do not impede communication. The use of less common items shows an awareness of style, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 6.5 to 7.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over longer sentences containing subordinate clauses, as seen in 'Since I will be studying part-time, my available hours to work... are from the evening 5pm to midnight...'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing present, such as 'its been 2 years' (missing apostrophe in 'it's'), 'evening 5pm' (redundant phrasing), and 'Thank you for the assistance' (article usage). Despite these errors, the majority of sentences are clear, and punctuation is generally handled well. The mistakes do not impede communication, supporting a solid Band 6.5 performance.
