Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to formally request you to make some amendments in my working schedule. I am currently working as a full-time employee on 2B floor at Villa Santa Maria Community.
I would like to decrease my hours of working from full-time to part-time because I am currently preparing for my NCLEX-RN exam to get my nursing license. I am unable to concentrate on my studies while working full-time.
I would suggest to assign me weekends and mornings in particular if possible. As I can study after I finish work in mornings. Working mornings will allow me some time to rest and plan my further study plan.
I will give my best efforts to clear my exam in the first attempt. As soon as, I pass my exam, I would be able to contribute my nursing skills to our organization by working as a Registered Nurse and will provide a highest quality of care to our residents.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Anjali Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You successfully covered all parts of the prompt in your letter. You clearly explained why you want to reduce your working hours, stating that you are preparing for your NCLEX-RN exam. You also specified the hours you would like to work, suggesting weekends and mornings. Furthermore, you described how your studies would benefit your employer by explaining that you would be able to contribute your nursing skills as a Registered Nurse and provide high-quality care to residents. Your purpose is well-developed, and the tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a boss. Overall, you have fully addressed all requirements of a General Training Task 1 letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
Your letter is easy to follow and your ideas are logically sequenced. You used clear paragraphing, with each paragraph focusing on a different aspect of the prompt, such as your current situation, your preferred hours, and the benefits to your employer. Cohesive devices are generally well managed, although some transitional phrases could be more varied. For instance, sentences like 'I would suggest to assign me' could flow better with smoother connectors. Overall, the progression of information is clear and appropriate for a standard workplace request letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrated an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for this task, using appropriate professional terms such as 'full-time employee', 'NCLEX-RN exam', 'Registered Nurse', and 'organization'. However, there are some minor collocation and word choice inaccuracies, such as 'decrease my hours of working' instead of 'reduce my working hours' and 'suggest to assign me' instead of 'suggest assigning me'. Despite these occasional slips, your vocabulary is precise enough to communicate your message clearly without causing any misunderstanding for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using subordinate clauses in sentences like 'As soon as, I pass my exam, I would be able to contribute...'. However, there are some grammatical errors and punctuation issues, such as the unnecessary comma after 'As soon as' and preposition choices like 'on 2B floor' instead of 'on the 2B floor'. Additionally, 'suggest to assign me' should be 'suggest assigning me' or 'suggest that you assign me'. While these errors persist, they do not impede communication, and the majority of your sentences are easily understood.
