Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Boss,
I am writing this letter to request you to reduce my working hours in order to study part time, as I am thinking to get admission into a new course which provides evening classes. For your information, my MBA course classes are going to start next month and the timings for the classes are 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Moreover, I have opted for the evening classes so that I can balance work and studies efficiently. Therefore, I can work from 9 AM to 4 PM on weekdays.
In my opinion, I believe that this course of MBA in marketing is beneficial for my current job profile. It will enhance my knowledge in marketing management, and along with this I will get to learn more about principles of accounting and finances which will definetly serve the purpose once I get promoted to the managerial positions.
At the end , I would like to thank you for being supportive and considerate throughout. I will appreciate if you understand my situation and accept my request. I will be looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours Sincerely,
Sania Farrukh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions effectively. You successfully explain why you want to reduce your hours by mentioning your MBA course and evening class timings, state the exact hours you would like to work such as 'from 9 AM to 4 PM on weekdays', and describe how the studies would benefit your employer by enhancing your marketing management and finance skills for potential managerial positions. The tone of the letter is appropriate and polite, adopting a semi-formal register suitable for communicating with a boss. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning and sustained throughout. All parts of the prompt are fully addressed with relevant, coherent ideas, meeting the criteria for a solid performance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, body paragraphs addressing specific points, and a polite closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate your request and timing from the employer benefits. Cohesive devices are employed to connect your thoughts, such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'along with this'. However, some of the transitions feel slightly mechanical or conversational, and referencing could be smoother in places. Overall progression is clear, guiding the reader logically through your explanation, proposed schedule, and the mutual benefits of your part-time studies without causing confusion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with adequate flexibility and precision. You successfully use less common items and subject-specific terms such as 'managerial positions', 'marketing management', and 'considerate throughout'. There are occasional awkward word choices, such as 'thinking to get admission' instead of 'thinking of applying for admission' or 'planning to enroll', and a minor spelling error ('definetly'). Nevertheless, the vocabulary is more than adequate for the task, and lexical errors do not impede communication, allowing for a clear and professional tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You display a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses effectively, as seen in sentences like 'Moreover, I have opted for the evening classes so that I can balance work and studies efficiently.' There are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I will appreciate if you understand' instead of 'I would appreciate it if you understood', and a redundant phrase in 'I am writing this letter to request you to reduce my working hours'. Punctuation is generally sound, and despite these occasional lapses, grammar and sentence structures remain clear and do not impede the reader's understanding.
