Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to formally request you to reduce my working hours, as I am planning to persue my studies however, I would prefer to continue my current employement diligently.
I would prefer to take admission in the Univerity of Gujrat and they have strict rules regarding schedule and attendence. Furthermore, a student requires a minimum of seventy percent attendence to get the required degree. I am getting myself registered in Phd programs of management sciences it will require more than seventy- five percent attendance which could be possible only if you lessen my working hours so that I would be able to maintain work-study balance.
All the classes will be held in the morning from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, I would be available from 12:30 to onwards. I would really appreciate your efforts if you could allow me flexible work hours for a certain period. I would workhard to focus on both with my endless efforts and harwork.
I asure you that upgrading my current degree will be benefical for the company in the long run. I would use the updated knowlege for the prosperity of my company as It will enhance my perspective according to the latest trends. I would try to share my hands-on experience and knowledge with my fellow colleagues so that we all contribute towards the success of our company.
I hope you will consider my request,
Yours faithfully
Albert Alice.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response effectively covers all three bullet points required in the prompt. You clearly explained why you want to reduce your working hours, stating that you plan to pursue a PhD in management sciences and need to meet strict attendance requirements. You successfully specified your desired hours, noting that you would be available from 12:30 pm onwards after morning classes. Furthermore, you outlined how your part-time studies would benefit your employer by enhancing your perspective on the latest industry trends and allowing you to share hands-on experience and knowledge with your colleagues. The tone of the letter is appropriate, and the purpose is maintained throughout. Although there are some minor linguistic slips, all parts of the task are well-addressed, demonstrating a clear position and well-developed ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter exhibits a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Ideas are grouped reasonably well into paragraphs, starting with the main request, moving on to the specific schedule and university requirements, and concluding with the benefits to the company. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Furthermore' and 'All the classes', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or abrupt, particularly in the run-on sentence structures like '...management sciences it will require...'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the letter logically, ensuring the reader can follow the writer's intentions easily from the opening salutation to the sign-off.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You display an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'formally request', 'diligently', 'flexible work hours', and 'prosperity'. However, there are several noticeable spelling errors and inappropriate word choices, such as 'persue' instead of 'pursue', 'employement' instead of 'employment', 'Univerity' instead of 'University', 'attendence' instead of 'attendance', 'Phd' instead of 'PhD', 'knowlege' instead of 'knowledge', 'asure' instead of 'assure', and 'benefical' instead of 'beneficial'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the score from reaching a higher band. More careful proofreading of common words would significantly strengthen this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'I am writing to formally request you to reduce...' and '...so that I would be able to maintain work-study balance.' However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues, notably run-on sentences and comma splices, such as '...planning to persue my studies however, I would prefer...' and '...management sciences it will require...'. There is also awkward phrasing in sentences like 'I would really appreciate your efforts if you could allow me' and 'I would workhard to focus on both with my endless efforts and harwork.' Despite these recurring errors and occasional mechanical issues, the meaning remains clear throughout.
