Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Smith,

Hope this letter finds you in radiant health and high spirits. I am writing this letter to request you to shorter my working hours in order to accommodate my part-time studies.

I would like to iterate you that I have recently enrolled into a part-time PV regulatory submissions diploma. As my classes are scheduled in the afternoon hours, it would be really grateful if you can reduce my office working hours so that I can dedicate few hours from the day to my studies.

It would be really great if you can shift my working schedule from morning to evening i.e. from 5 pm to 11 pm so that I have ample amount of time in morning to focus on my course assignments.

Furthermore, after completion of this course, I would be able to bring high knowledge of recent modifications made in regulatory timelines at my workplace which would in turn benefit various regulatory projects.

Looking forward to hear a positive response from your end at the earliest.

Yours sincerely,

Jagroop Ghuman.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully covered all parts of the task prompt. You clearly explained why you want to reduce your working hours due to a part-time diploma, specified your preferred hours as 5 pm to 11 pm, and described how your studies would benefit your employer through your enhanced knowledge of regulatory timelines. Your tone is appropriately polite and formal for a letter to a boss. Ideas are extended and supported well, leading to a solid band 7 performance for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter follows a clear, logical structure with an appropriate greeting, body paragraphs addressing each bullet point, and a polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively to separate your points. You utilized cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'so that' to connect ideas, though some transitions like 'I would like to iterate you' sound a bit unnatural. Overall progression is clear throughout, earning a solid band 7.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrated a sufficient range of vocabulary with some less common items such as 'accommodate', 'regulatory submissions diploma', and 'modifications'. However, there are several word choice and collocation inaccuracies. For instance, you wrote 'shorter my working hours' instead of 'shorten', 'iterate you' instead of 'reiterate to you', and 'dedicate few hours' instead of 'dedicate a few hours'. These minor errors prevent a higher score, but communication is never impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and subordinate clauses in sentences like 'As my classes are scheduled in the afternoon hours, it would be really grateful if you can reduce my office working hours...' However, there are notable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'it would be really grateful if you can' (where the subject 'I' should be grateful, not 'it'). There are also minor tense and preposition slips, keeping this at a band 6 level.
