Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I want to study in a part time program. As a result, I am writing to request in reduction of my working hours.

I enroll my self in a sort program called 'Group Management'. Basically, this program would be able to improve my leadrship quality. My working hours are conflicting with my study schedule. Therefore, I would like to request a reduction in my working hours.

My study time is in the afternoon though, I can work for the entire morning. In addition, I can finish my pending work during the evening. I will try to accomplish all my tasks on time. Furthermore, I am open to work remotely as well. As a result, there will no inconvenience from my side.

Although this program is very important for me, our company would get some benefits from it. Later, I can work with our team with more confidence. Also I can help others with my experience.

I look forward to hearing from you regarding my request. I hope to get a positive response. Thank you for reading this letter in your busy schedule.

Yours sincerely,

Meet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response covers all three bullet points required in the prompt. You successfully explained why you want to reduce your working hours (to study 'Group Management' to improve leadership), stated which hours you would like to work (mornings and remotely in the evening), and described how your studies would benefit your employer (gaining confidence and helping others with your experience). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a boss. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic and could be expanded further to fully hit the higher band descriptors. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are adequately addressed, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing specific aspects of the request, and a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'As a result', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore' are used to connect ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive ('As a result' is used twice). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as the work schedule and the benefits to the company. Referencing is generally clear, giving the text an overall coherent arrangement that allows the reader to follow your request easily, aligning well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message with terms like 'program', 'leadership quality', 'pending work', and 'remotely'. However, there are some noticeable vocabulary and collocation errors, such as saying 'request in reduction' instead of 'request a reduction', and 'I enroll my self in a sort program' instead of 'short course' or 'program'. Less common lexical items are attempted but occasionally misused. Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical inaccuracies place this response firmly in the Band 6.0 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response shows a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentence forms, such as conditional or concessive clauses ('Although this program is very important for me...'). There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense choice ('I enroll my self' instead of 'I have enrolled myself'), spelling errors ('leadrship' and 'there will no'), and missing articles ('in reduction'). While these errors are noticeable and require the reader to occasionally pause, they do not impede overall communication. The command of grammar is consistent with a Band 6.0 performance.
