Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Manager,
I am writing to express my concern with regard to my working hours in this company.
As you know the school will be reopening next week ,I would like to reduce my working hours considerably.
I prefer to work in the morning, exactly from 5 a.m utill noon every week and I would be only available to work saturday any time between 3 p.m to till 10 p.m. I have a very busy schedule in this school year.
I would be really concernd about my work this year because I am saving money for my higher studies. Hence, I will be more dedicated and trustworthy while working at the company. Even though I reduced my working hours, I would be pusing my limit to work really good.
I hope you will consider my requet and provide adequate working hours ,which would not disturb my school hours.
Best regards,
KK JJ

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully explained why you want to reduce your working hours due to your studies, specified your preferred hours, and described how your studies would benefit your employer by making you more dedicated and trustworthy. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and the tone is slightly confused at the beginning, where you state you are writing to express 'concern with regard to my working hours' rather than making a standard request. Additionally, there are minor inconsistencies, such as mentioning that you are saving money for higher studies while also mentioning school hours. Despite these minor issues, all task requirements are addressed satisfactorily, earning a band score of 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a reasonably coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure from the opening statement to the sign-off. Paragraphing is attempted to separate different ideas, although the paragraph blocks are quite short and choppy. Cohesive devices are used simply, such as 'Hence' and 'Even though', but referencing is occasionally faulty, such as the unclear shift between school and work commitments. While paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the main points, the lack of smoother transitional phrases prevents the letter from achieving a higher band. Overall, the organisation is clear enough to follow without difficulty, resulting in a band score of 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You attempted some less common vocabulary items and phrases, such as 'considerably', 'trustworthy', and 'dedicated'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that detract from the overall quality, such as writing 'utill' instead of 'until', 'concernd' instead of 'concerned', 'pusing' instead of 'pushing', and 'requet' instead of 'request'. Furthermore, expressions like 'pusing my limit to work really good' are informal and imprecise. Because these lexical errors do not impede overall communication but occur regularly, the response fits the descriptor for a band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and concessive clauses ('Even though I reduced my working hours, I would be pusing my limit...'). However, grammatical control is inconsistent, with several errors in punctuation, prepositions, and verb forms. For example, you wrote 'from 5 a.m utill noon every week and I would be only available to work saturday any time between 3 p.m to till 10 p.m', which contains redundant phrasing ('to till') and incorrect capitalization on 'saturday'. Punctuation around clauses is also occasionally weak. Because these errors cause some minor distraction but do not impede communication, a band score of 5.5 is appropriate.
