Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I am writing this letter to inform you about the course I am going to take this summer and want to reduce my working availability.
Due to increasing compietion in our field i want to take the summer internship that is going to take place in Western University. They are organizing an internship for the people who want to upscasle in culinary trade, which is in total of 2 months of Co-op and one written exam to sucssesfully obtain the certication for the course.
The official schedule for the Co-op is out and the timing are from Monday to friday from 7am to 5pm. Hence my job hours will surely going to affect, I cannot work on the weekdays but I can surely work on weekends shifts which are usually from 8am to 4am.
This course will benefit me and our resturant in several ways because the Red seal certification helps individual to know more about the culinary things and eventually this will help our restuarant in many ways such as food cost, menu selection, how to make a proper balance in our sauces and in many other ways.
I am very much looking forward to take this course to have better future for myself and for our restuarant.
Your faithfully,
Atul

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required in the prompt. First, the reason for reducing hours is clearly explained through the mention of a summer internship at Western University. Second, the specific hours desired are stated, indicating a shift to weekend work. Third, the benefits to the employer are highlighted, such as improved culinary skills that can assist with food cost and menu selection. Although there are some minor mechanical and spelling errors throughout the text, such as in "compietion" and "upscasle", the purpose of the letter is fully communicated and all parts of the task are adequately addressed, earning a solid band 6.5 to 7.0. Given the clear coverage of all requirements, a band 6.5 is appropriate.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning, body paragraphs addressing different prompt points, and a sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the explanation of the course, the scheduling details, the benefits to the restaurant, and the conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition "Hence my job hours will surely going to affect" is awkward and lacks smooth integration. Reference words and logical connectors are occasionally misused, resulting in minor disruptions to the flow. Overall, the organization is clear enough to secure a band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as "internship", "certification", and "culinary trade". However, there are several noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including "compietion" instead of competition, "upscasle" instead of upscale, "sucssesfully" instead of successfully, and "certication" instead of certification. Phrases like "culinary things" are overly basic and imprecise. While communication is not impeded and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, the frequency of lexical inaccuracies places this response firmly at band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional or relative clauses ("for the people who want to upscale..."). However, there are frequent grammatical errors in tense and structure, such as "timing are" instead of timings are, "my job hours will surely going to affect" instead of my working hours will surely be affected, and "looking forward to take" instead of looking forward to taking. Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent, as seen in "friday" and "resturant". These errors occasionally cause minor strain for the reader, leading to a band score of 5.5.
