Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

I am writing to you to request a slight change in my working hours. I recently have decided to pursue a part time study course in a foreign university, R.K University.

The course is for about 10 months and it provides 3-4 hours of online class starting from 2 pm in the afternoon. As a result, I need to keep the working hours settled from 8 am to 1:30 pm. I assure you that all my significant duties will be taken seriously, and will be completed in my assigned working time.

This course, Finance Managment, offers to teach about numerous finance issues and details to manange the related field.

My study in such kind of stream may lead to benefit other employers by learning the useful techniques of handling finance

.

It would be really appreciated if you could provide the prompt response to this letter at your ealiest convenience.

Yours faithfully,

Richa

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully covering why you want to reduce your working hours, specifying the required hours, and explaining the benefits to your employer. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or simplistic. For instance, explaining the benefits of your 'Finance Managment' studies to the employer is somewhat brief and could be extended with more specific examples. Despite this, your position and purpose are clear throughout, fulfilling the core requirements of this task level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Your letter shows a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. You begin with a clear opening, use paragraph breaks effectively to separate different points such as your schedule and the benefits to the company, and close appropriately. Cohesive devices are used, though referencing is occasionally mechanical, such as transitioning between your class timings and your assurances about duties. Overall, the structure is easy to follow and guides the reader smoothly through your request.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items related to work and study, such as 'pursue a part time study course'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('Managment', 'ealiest') and awkward word choices or collocations ('in such kind of stream', 'provide the prompt response'). These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a lower band limitation in precision and control over less common lexical items and standard spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I assure you that all my significant duties will be taken seriously, and will be completed in my assigned working time.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including a missing comma and incorrect preposition usage in phrases like 'in a foreign university, R.K University', but these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter.
