Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I would like to request you to reduce my working hours in order to study part time. I got an admission in MSC in Global Engineering and Management which will start after a week. It is difficult for me to do full time job while studying that is the primary reason to doing it part time.
I would like to work on the Friday to Sunday in the evening from 5 PM to 10 PM. I chose these days because I have lectures and meetings during Monday to Thursday. Furthermore, It is also suitable hours for your restaurant which is mostly gets busy in the weekends.
I will learn about customer relationship & management subjects during the 1st semester that will directly help me to achieve desire goal and while serving the maximum number of the customers.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Dhwani Thummar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You successfully covered all parts of the task prompt, establishing a clear purpose for your letter. You explained your need to reduce hours due to starting a Master of Science in Global Engineering and Management, specified your requested hours from Friday to Sunday evening, and described how your studies will benefit your employer through customer relationship and management subjects. However, while all bullet points are addressed, some ideas remain slightly under-developed. For instance, the explanation of how your studies will benefit the restaurant could be extended with more specific workplace applications to reach the next level of fully elaborated support.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from explaining the situation to proposing specific hours and outlining workplace benefits. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each main point of your request. Cohesion between sentences is generally clear, though some referencing and transitions feel a bit mechanical, such as 'Furthermore, It is also suitable hours'. To achieve a higher standard of cohesion, you could use a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between your personal schedule and the employer's needs.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You used an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases like 'primary reason' and 'customer relationship & management'. However, there are several word choice, collocation, and word form errors that prevent a higher mark, such as 'I got an admission in' instead of 'admission to', 'do full time job' missing an article, and 'it is also suitable hours' where the pronoun agreement is faulty. Spelling and meaning remain clear throughout, ensuring communication is not impeded, but greater precision in lexical choices is needed.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
Your writing shows a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures while attempting more intricate clauses, such as 'which will start after a week' and 'that will directly help me'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including the lowercase 'It' after a comma in 'Furthermore, It', missing articles before singular countable nouns like 'full time job', and prepositions inside grammatical patterns like 'do it part time'. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and represent the typical mixed control expected at this level.
