Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You successfully address all parts of the prompt, fulfilling the requirements for a General Training letter. You explain your reason for wanting to reduce your working hours due to a marketing course, specify the hours you wish to work, and describe how your studies will benefit your employer. Your purpose is clear from the beginning. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or vague. For instance, stating that you will work on weekends or come in for urgent issues is a bit repetitive and lacks precise clarity regarding your normal schedule adjustment. To reach a higher level, you need to extend and support your ideas with more fully developed explanations and greater clarity throughout all bullet points, ensuring every detail is thoroughly explored.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending. You use standard letter-writing conventions, and the progression of your ideas is generally logical, moving from the request and explanation to the benefits and concluding remarks. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points. However, cohesion is sometimes a bit mechanical or basic. For example, transition phrases could be smoother, and referencing across sentences could be tightened to avoid slight choppiness, such as the sudden shift between the course details and your proposed work schedule. To improve further, you should integrate cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that logical relationships between sentences are always seamless.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message with terms like 'utilised', 'admisssion', and 'tacke'. You attempt some less common vocabulary related to your workplace and studies. However, there are some noticeable word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'in accordance to' instead of 'in accordance with', 'admisssion' with a triple 's', and 'tacke' instead of 'tackle'. Additionally, some phrasing is slightly unnatural. These errors do not impede communication, but they keep your score at the present level. To achieve a higher band, you need to use a wider range of vocabulary with greater precision, better control of collocations, and completely accurate spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating the ability to construct longer sentences with subordinate clauses, such as 'I am writing this letter in accordance to request permission for reducing my working hours by 4 hours to study part time.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('a good score', 'an admission') and preposition usage within grammatical patterns, but these errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure your meaning. To reach the next level, you need to produce a higher frequency of error-free sentences using a wider variety of complex grammatical structures with consistent accuracy and precise punctuation.
