Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to reduce my working hours because I enrolled in part time studies. I want to cut my work hours to pay more attention on my academics. Working less will help to do studies in proper way.

I will like to work three days a week because I have my classes other days. I appericiate if you provide me morning shifts from 9am to 5pm, which also gives me time to study after doing work.

Moreover, I am further studying in my employment field, which also provides help in my career and benefits you in future. I am learning supervisor skills in my course, so you can give me more responsibilities afterwards to meet your requirements.

Kindly consider my request by reducing my working hours.

Yours faithfully,

Kesar Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining the reason for reducing hours, specifying the desired working schedule, and describing the benefits to the employer. The purpose is clearly stated, and the ideas are relevant. However, because the text contains 135 words, it falls short of the minimum 150-word requirement, which prevents it from fully developing all aspects of the task. While the explanation of studies and the schedule are clear, the benefit to the employer is somewhat under-developed and general. To reach a higher level, the response needs to meet the word count threshold and expand further on how the studies will practically assist the workplace.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, starting with an appropriate greeting and ending with a standard sign-off. The progression of ideas is generally logical, moving from the personal motivation to work schedule changes, and finally to the employer benefits. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as "Moreover" and "which also", though referencing is occasionally mechanical or repetitive. To achieve a higher standard, the transitions between sentences could be smoother, and cohesive relationships could be managed with greater flexibility rather than relying on basic connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as "academics", "supervisor skills", and "employment field". However, there are notable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word formation. For instance, phrases like "pay more attention on my academics" misuse prepositions, "do studies in proper way" is unnatural, and "appericiate" contains a spelling error. The phrase "further studying" is also an awkward collocation. These lexical errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the score, and more precise, natural phrasing is needed for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses such as "which also gives me time to study" and "which also provides help". There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles and slight tense awkwardness in "I will like to work" instead of "I would like", and "on other days" rather than "other days". However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to easily grasp the meaning. To reach the next level, a greater variety of error-free complex structures and tighter control over verb forms and prepositions are required.
