Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am Dhvani Tailor, a product supervisor of the company, writing this to make a request about reducing my working hours as I have to do study for the part time.

Firstly, I am glad that I found this company for my growth and development. I have been working here since three years for the full time. I have learnt so many things while working here. However, I have an interest in further studies of marketing and customer services. For that reason, I have enrolled in a short course. It is a part time course that will improve my marketing skills effectively.

I personally keen to learn this, so that I can implement those developed skills here to gain more profit. I would like to request you to grant me permission for the same. I will be available in the morning session at the office. After completing my work, I will attend online classes in the afternoon.

I have full faith in the management and expecting the positive response, as it is going to be beneficial to both of us in the future.

I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Dhvani Tailor.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, maintaining a clear and polite tone suitable for a formal request to a boss. You clearly explain why you want to reduce your working hours due to pursuing marketing and customer service studies, state the specific hours you wish to work by being available in the morning and taking classes in the afternoon, and describe how your employer will benefit through the implementation of your new skills. While all bullet points are covered, some ideas, such as the direct benefits to the company, show a slight tendency towards over-generalisation rather than deeply extended explanations, placing the response solidly in this category.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout, moving smoothly from the initial request and personal background into the reasons, proposed schedule, and mutual benefits. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to group related ideas. Cohesive devices are generally managed well, though some transitions like 'Firstly' and 'However' feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is mostly clear, and the overall arrangement meets the expectations of a well-structured letter, showing some characteristics of higher bands while retaining typical features of the current level.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing sufficient range to convey your message. You attempt less common lexical items such as 'growth and development' and 'implementation', though there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as writing 'do study for the part time' instead of 'study part-time' and 'I personally keen' instead of 'I am personally keen'. Additionally, 'since three years' should be 'for three years'. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect the vocabulary profile characteristic of this band level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms used throughout the letter, such as conditional and subordinate clauses in phrases like 'After completing my work, I will attend...'. You demonstrate good control over basic punctuation and sentence boundaries. However, there are some grammar errors present, including missing articles ('do study for the part time') and incorrect prepositional usage ('since three years' instead of 'for three years'). These errors persist throughout the text, but because they rarely impede communication and you maintain control over basic structures, the writing fits this grammatical profile.
