Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I hope this letter finds you well.
I am Roger, who is working as an adminstrative assisstant in your renowned firm. Today, I am writing this letter to inform you about my plans of part time study course and due to this I will not able to serve my current working hours.
My Aministrative management course will begin from the 15 Oct, 2026 till 15 Jan, 2026. During this period, I will only be able to work for 8 hours a day on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Remaining days, I have to go to the college and also to the place where I have to complete my internship. It would be great if you change my availability according to my schedule so that I can complete my couse and study well.
Additionally, this couse will help gaining more knowledge of administration which I can apply in my currect job role. Also, I will be fully capable of handling the administration and management staff at you new branch for which you are looking for a new Admin manager.
I hope you consider my reduced working hour perposal. I will be very thankful for you.
Yours sincerely,
Roger Smash

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the task. The writer clearly explains the reason for reducing hours (to attend a part-time study course and internship), states the preferred working hours (8 hours a day on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays), and describes the benefits to the employer (gaining administrative knowledge to apply in the current role and helping manage a new branch). However, some ideas show features of the next level while remaining partially under-developed. For instance, the explanation of the schedule on the remaining days is slightly vague, and the description of the benefits could be extended with more specific details. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and easily understood throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear letter format, starting with an appropriate greeting and ending with a formal sign-off. Paragraphing is utilised to separate the introduction, the specific schedule details, the workplace benefits, and the conclusion. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or slightly faulty. For example, the transition into the second paragraph feels abrupt ('Today, I am writing this letter...'), and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the phrase 'Remaining days, I have to go to the college'. To achieve a higher band, the use of cohesive devices could be smoother and more natural, ensuring a stronger logical progression between sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common business and academic terms such as 'administrative assistant', 'renowned firm', and 'internship'. However, there are several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that prevent a higher score. For instance, 'adminstrative assisstant' and 'Aministrative management course' contain spelling mistakes, while phrases like 'help gaining more knowledge' (should be 'help me gain') and 'currect job role' demonstrate issues with word form and collocation. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect the limitations characteristic of this level, where greater precision and control over less common lexical items are still developing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use relative clauses and conditional structures, such as 'which you are looking for a new Admin manager' and 'It would be great if you change my availability'. There are, however, several errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include tense confusion in the dates ('from the 15 Oct, 2026 till 15 Jan, 2026' where preposition pairing is faulty), missing modal verbs ('I will not able to serve'), and minor prepositional inaccuracies ('go to the college'). Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to produce a greater proportion of error-free sentences when attempting complex grammatical structures.
