Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully explaining the reason for reducing hours, proposing specific evening and weekend shifts, and describing the benefits to the employer. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or simplistic, particularly the explanation of how clinical problems will be managed, reflecting a standard typical of the band. The tone is appropriately semi-formal for a workplace letter, and the purpose is clearly communicated throughout the writing. To reach a higher level, the ideas would need more extension and clearer detail regarding the specific benefits the employer gains from the advanced studies.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear sequence of ideas across paragraphs, moving logically from the main request to the preferred schedule and finally the benefits. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct points. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'Moreover' and 'Therefore', though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical or simplistic. For instance, linking sentences like 'So, according to that schedule which ever you prefer for me I would be available' lacks smooth integration. Greater flexibility and a more natural flow of information would be required to move up further.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the basic message, but the range is quite limited. There are several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'cource' instead of course, 'decrese' instead of decrease, and 'benefits' instead of beneficial. Phrases like 'manage for the evening shifts' and 'My this cource would be benefits' show restricted control over collocations and word forms. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score, and a much wider, more precise range of professional vocabulary is needed for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing this letter in order to inform you that I would like to reduce...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, including 'I would like to here back from you' (spelling of 'hear'), missing articles or incorrect plurals like 'start my college', and slightly awkward phrasing like 'night shifts also works for me'. Punctuation and verb agreements show occasional inaccuracies, but these errors rarely impede overall communication, placing the grammatical performance firmly in this band range.
