Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear manager,

I am writing this letter in reduction of my working hours from Full-time to part-time, as I have enrolled myself in a CPA program, which will enhance my knowledge and understanding towards Accounting more effectively. I think that if I prepare myself for this course while doing part-time work, it will provide future support for my growth within the organization.

I know it's a bit complicated to turn my full-time hours into part-time since I joined the company on full-time working condition and it's really hard for the organization to make the changes. If you agree with this, then I would prefer working in the morning shifts, which starts from 8:00 am and 2:00 pm. Therefore, I can make it to attend my classes in the evening time.

Moreover, this course will definitely benefit the organization, since the company is looking to hire a CPA candidate to fill future designation in the Finance Department. So, it would be appreciated if you accept my request for reducing my working hours to part-time.

Yours sincerely,

Raghav Jhanji

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, earning a solid score. You clearly explain why you want to reduce your working hours by mentioning your enrollment in the CPA program and the desire to enhance your accounting knowledge. You also specify the exact hours you would like to work, stating your preference for morning shifts from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm, and describe how your part-time studies will benefit your employer by fulfilling future finance department needs. While your position is clear and all three bullet points are covered, some ideas, such as the future growth within the organization, are slightly under-developed and could benefit from further elaboration and specific examples to reach a higher level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You establish an appropriate formal structure starting with a standard salutation and ending with a professional sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction of your request, your proposed hours and scheduling details, and the benefits to the employer into distinct, logical blocks. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as 'Moreover' and 'Therefore', to connect your ideas, although referencing and transitions could be slightly more fluid and varied to achieve a more sophisticated flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary range is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your message about reducing work hours for studies. You attempt some less common vocabulary items, such as 'enrollment', 'designation', and 'organization', demonstrating an awareness of formal style. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as writing 'in reduction of my working hours' instead of 'to reduce my working hours', and 'knowledge and understanding towards Accounting' rather than 'knowledge and understanding of accounting'. These minor word-choice slips and prepositions within lexical chunks prevent the vocabulary score from rising into the higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a workable mix of simple and complex sentence forms, effectively constructing multi-clause sentences such as 'I think that if I prepare myself for this course while doing part-time work, it will provide future support...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation present throughout the text, including the phrasing 'on full-time working condition' instead of 'under full-time working conditions' and missing hyphens in 'part-time'. Punctuation and verb tense handling show occasional minor slips, but these errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure your intended meaning.
