Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the bullet points by explaining the desire to reduce hours, stating the preferred night shift hours, and describing how the studies would benefit the employer through welding graphic design. However, some ideas remain under-developed, such as the exact details of the technical problems. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response is slightly below the minimum word count of 150 words, sitting at 144 words. To reach a higher band, all parts of the prompt would need fuller extension and the length requirement must be fully satisfied.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraph breaks separating the introduction, body points, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore' and 'That's why', though referencing is at times a little mechanical and abrupt. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the letter logically from stating the purpose to outlining workplace benefits and making the final request. To progress further, paragraph transitions could be smoother and referencing words more varied to guide the reader effortlessly through the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary is minimally adequate for the task, with attempts at less common phrasing such as 'welding graphic design' and 'technical things'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'decrese' instead of decrease, 'ful-time' instead of full-time, and 'day time' instead of daytime. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, vocabulary range needs to be wider and more precise, accompanied by greater spelling accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on basic forms alongside faulty attempts at complex sentences, such as 'which i able to attend if get night shift.' There are frequent errors in articles, prepositions, and verb patterns, such as 'i am full-time welder', 'in your company.Actually', and 'transfer me in night shift'. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate a better mix of error-free complex structures and correct control over basic grammatical patterns.
