Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Peter,

I am writing to inform you about the change in my work availability hours as I have taken up a part time study course. I have embarked on studying french recently, which has a fixed schedule for the classes and this contradicts with my current working hours.

I would like to cover evening shifts mainly throughout the weekends as my classes take place in the morning time. I am trying my best to stay as much as flexible for the work during the weekdays if provided with an early work notice.

Fortunately, this part time study would prove to be very imperative towards ours business too. Our team has inadequate amount of bilingual workers. There are vacancies in the customer care sector as per our job listings which emphasize on bilingual service.

I would be grateful to recieve my new schedule as per the availabilty provided.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, as you successfully explain why you want to reduce your working hours due to French classes, specify your preferred evening and weekend shifts, and describe how your studies will benefit your employer through bilingual customer care. However, note that the response is two words short of the minimum length requirement of 150 words. While the ideas are relevant, some parts of the response remain somewhat under-developed, such as the exact details of your flexibility during weekdays. To reach a higher band, all bullet points would need more fully extended support and elaboration alongside meeting the minimum word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

There is a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the letter, reflecting a coherent overall arrangement. Information and ideas flow reasonably well from explaining the situation to detailing the preferred hours and the benefits to the company. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate distinct points, such as the introduction, the scheduling request, the employer benefits, and the closing statement. Cohesive devices are used adequately, though referencing and transitions could be slightly more varied and seamless to achieve a more advanced level of flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, successfully conveying your message about reducing work hours for part-time studies. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary and phraseology, such as 'embarked on' and 'bilingual workers', though some word choices and collocations contain inaccuracies, such as 'work availability hours' instead of 'working hours' or 'availability', and 'imperative towards ours business' instead of 'beneficial to our business'. Spelling is generally accurate, but minor word-choice errors occur that do not impede overall communication. A wider range of precise lexical items with better control over collocations would elevate this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a solid foundation in grammatical control. You successfully incorporate complex structures, such as 'as I have taken up a part time study course' and 'as my classes take place in the morning time'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'contradicts with' instead of 'contradicts', 'morning time' instead of 'mornings', and the misspelling in 'recieve', but these errors rarely impede communication and do not cause difficulty for the reader. To reach the next level, a higher frequency of completely error-free complex sentences and finer control over prepositions would be required.
