Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs. Ron,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to request you to bring change in my regular hours at job, as I am going to enroll in a part time course at the University of Calgary.
Firstly, I want to reduce hours because I want to focus at my studies, if not I will be not able to get required marks; moreover, wihout that, I will not get scholarship. which, reduce the I have to pay as a fee, which is a considerable amount for me.
Furthermore, my classes are from Monday to Wednesday from 9 AM to 6 PM, during that hours I will not be able to work; however, I can work Monday to Wednessday after 7 PM, and Thursday to Sunday anytime, according to your choice.
Nevertheless, This change would bring a significant difficulity to you to modifiy my schedule; whereas, I would bring valuable addition to the job, as I got enroll in a technology course, through which I will learn significant uses of technology in this modern era, which will further help us in future outcomes of our organisation.
I hope you will not disappoint and will give me a positive response.
Sincerely,
Ramandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you explain that you need time to study and qualify for a scholarship, give your class schedule and proposed availability, and describe how technology studies could help the organisation. The request is clear and relevant. The benefit to your employer is the least developed point: “help us in future outcomes” is vague, so specify practical applications, such as improving a process or using new software. The proposed hours also need clarification because you say you can work after 7 p.m. on Monday to Wednesday, although classes finish at 6 p.m., without stating an end time or total weekly hours. More precise details and fuller support would strengthen an otherwise complete response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a recognisable progression from the request and its reason to your availability, the employer benefit, and a closing. Paragraphing helps separate these points, and connectors such as “Firstly,” “Furthermore,” and “Nevertheless” show an effort to guide the reader. However, some links are mechanical or do not express the relationship accurately: “Nevertheless” introduces a concession, but the following sentence mainly presents a benefit. The scholarship explanation is also difficult to follow because “which, reduce the I have to pay” interrupts the sentence. Use clearer sentence boundaries and choose connectors for their precise meaning; this would make the progression smoother and the relationships between ideas easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main request and make some attempts at more formal or topic-specific language, including “significant,” “scholarship,” and “valuable addition.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “bring change in my regular hours at job,” “focus at my studies,” and “positive response.” Spelling errors in “wihout,” “Wednessday,” “difficulity,” and “modifiy” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they make the letter less natural and occasionally slow comprehension. Build a bank of standard workplace phrases and check spelling and collocations before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “as” and a contrast introduced by “however.” The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but some sentence structures and punctuation are faulty. For example, “I am writing to request you to bring change” needs a clearer grammatical pattern, while “if not I will be not able to get required marks” has problems with clause structure and word order. The scholarship sentence beginning “which” is incomplete and poorly punctuated, and “during that hours” shows an agreement error. Aim for shorter, complete sentences when explaining the scholarship and schedule, then check articles, agreement, and punctuation in longer sentences.
