Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writting this letter to ask you to reduce my working hours as i want to do my study part time.

Recently, I got my addmission in a Toronto University into Healthcare Administration And Service Management to study there part-time and my course going to start from next month, I have to reduce my working hours at work. So, i can focus on my study as this is really important for my career prospects.

As my course classes are mainly in mornings, I would be able to work here in either in afternoons or night. Moreover, I will not have any class on weekends, which allows me to work on weekends as well.

Currently, I am only working as a physiotherapy assistant, but after completing this course i would be able to work as a receptionist to maintaing patients record in your clinic.

I would be greteful if you could consider my request. I am more than happy to provide my availability for working hours for next month.

I look forward to your response at your earliest convenience.

Yours faithfully,

Margee

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you explain that your course is important for your career, propose afternoon or night work and weekends, and describe a possible future contribution to the clinic. The purpose of the letter is clear and the request is appropriately polite. The benefit to your employer is relevant, but it is less fully developed than the other points: explain more specifically how your training in healthcare administration could improve patient records or support clinic operations. The proposed schedule could also be made more precise, for example by stating the exact days and hours you are available. These details would make the request more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible sequence: you introduce your request, explain your studies, outline your availability, and then describe a potential benefit to the clinic before closing politely. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these points, and connectors such as “Moreover” and “Currently” support the progression. Some links are less smooth, however. The sentence beginning “Recently, I got my admission” combines several ideas and runs into the next point without clear punctuation, while “So, I can focus on my study” is not smoothly connected to the preceding sentence. Use shorter, clearly separated sentences and make the relationship between your course schedule and requested hours explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the situation, including “career prospects,” “availability,” and “patients record,” and the reader can understand your main message. There are also attempts at more specific terms, such as the name of your course and “physiotherapy assistant.” However, spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “writting,” “addmission,” “greteful,” and “maintaining” where a different form is needed. Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “do my study part time” and “work here in either in afternoons or night.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully; this will make your otherwise relevant vocabulary more effective.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple sentences and longer structures, including the relative clause in “which allows me to work on weekends as well” and the conditional request, “I would be grateful if you could consider my request.” The message remains understandable despite some grammatical errors. For example, “my course going to start” needs a finite verb, and “I have to reduce my working hours at work. So” has faulty sentence boundaries. There are also issues with articles, capitalization, and sentence construction, as in “as i want to do my study part time.” Review verb forms and punctuation, and separate the long sentence about your admission and course start into clearer units.
