Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir or madam,

I am writing to request you to reduce my working hours because I would like to do part-time course related to computerised accounting and taxation.

Currently, I am working in an account department as an book keeper. Usually, I am working monday to friday for eight hours. But, I will get enrolled in part -time course which are related to using new software in business accounting. I would like to work only three days from monday to wednesday as I will have a online class on wednesday and thursday.

However, this course is really important in my professional carrer in your organisation. Currently, our company is relied on outdated traditional accounting which is very time consuming process. You would be delighted to know that if I will learn new computerised accounting method, it will increase our company's efficiency and effectiveness in the long run. Furthermore, it will also help to maintain accounting data for cost and profit analysis. It would be grateful if you decrease my working hours for two months. I promised that after finishing my course I will work fivge days as I was used to do.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

yours faithfully,

Aman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: you explain that you want to study computerised accounting and taxation, specify a Monday-to-Wednesday schedule, and describe benefits such as improved efficiency and better data for cost and profit analysis. The request is also clear, and the promise to return to five working days gives the employer useful context. Your reasons are relevant and supported, which makes the letter persuasive. To strengthen it further, clarify the schedule because you say you want to work Monday to Wednesday but also mention online classes on Wednesday and Thursday. The proposed two-month period could also be linked more explicitly to the course duration, so the employer can understand the arrangement being requested.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible progression from the request, to your current role and proposed schedule, and then to the benefits for the company. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “However” make relationships between ideas visible. The overall arrangement is coherent, and the reader can follow your purpose. Some connections are less smooth or precise: “However” does not clearly signal a contrast before you explain the course’s importance, and the schedule details are difficult to reconcile. The final request and promise are also crowded into one paragraph. Use paragraph breaks for the request and practical arrangements, and choose connectors that accurately express the relationship between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a workplace request, including relevant terms such as “computerised accounting,” “outdated,” “efficiency,” and “cost and profit analysis.” These choices help explain both your studies and their potential value to the employer. You also attempt more formal expressions, although some are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “an account department,” “professional carrer,” and “It would be grateful.” Spelling errors, including “monday,” “fivge,” and “carrer,” reduce the overall accuracy. Aim for standard workplace collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, refer to the “accounts department” and say that you “would be grateful if you could” consider the request.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional explanation of how the course could help the company and a relative clause describing the course. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include “I am working monday to friday” instead of a present-simple routine, “a online class” instead of “an online class,” and “if I will learn” where a present form is needed after “if.” There are also agreement and verb-form problems in “course which are related” and “I promised.” Improve control of articles, subject–verb agreement, and conditional and past-tense forms, then proofread punctuation and capitalisation. More accurate complex sentences would make your request sound more professional.
