Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mam/Sir,
I am writing to let you know that i need less working hours so, i can study part time.Actually, I wanted to study French language which is very tough to study with this much hours of working.
Let me explain my situation, As growing demand of french i really wanted to learn that and the main reason behind this will help me in permanent residence(PR) in Canada. Its easier to get PR if i got results in french exam. As a result , i will get closer to my PR which seems impossible because of changes in immigration rules. As, an immigrant its a precious chance for me as im almost on edge of my visa expiration.
Would you kindly, give just sufficiant 30 hours which i neede as now not more that so, i can practice this language more precisely and succeed imn this. Moreover, this not only for my immigration purpose it will give advantages to you to becase after that i can interact with french people too as we have very less employers who can do that.
Thankyou for your consideration
Yours Faithfully,
Bhupinder kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you explain that studying French is difficult alongside your current hours, request a 30-hour schedule, and describe how French could help you communicate with French-speaking people at work. The immigration and visa context also makes your reason personal and relevant. The request is clear, and the letter has an appropriate closing. However, the proposed hours are not specific about which days or times you would work, and the employer benefit is only briefly stated rather than illustrated. To strengthen the response, specify a workable schedule and explain more concretely how French skills could support customers, colleagues, or the organisation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a generally understandable sequence: you introduce the request, explain your circumstances, state the number of hours sought, and mention a possible benefit to the employer. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “As a result” and “Moreover” signal connections between ideas. At times, however, the links feel mechanical or the references are unclear. For example, “the main reason behind this will help me” does not clearly identify what “this” refers to, and the final paragraph combines the request, study goal, and employer benefit in a crowded sequence. Use clearer topic sentences and divide the final ideas so each point develops logically.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to the situation, including “permanent residence,” “immigration rules,” “visa expiration,” and “interact with French people.” These choices communicate your circumstances and show some attempt to use topic-specific language. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “sufficiant 30 hours,” “results in french exam,” and “on edge of my visa expiration.” Spelling and capitalization errors, including “french” and “Thankyou,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural workplace and study expressions, and check spelling carefully. More precise phrasing would make your request sound clearer and more professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a reason clause in “so, i can study part time” and a conditional idea about how French could help at work. The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in sentence construction and punctuation sometimes make the relationships between ideas difficult to follow. For example, “As growing demand of french i really wanted to learn that” lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “As, an immigrant its a precious chance” has faulty punctuation and sentence formation. There are also inconsistent capitalisation and sentence boundaries. Practise building accurate clauses with clear subjects and verbs, then check punctuation and apostrophes.
