Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manager,

I am writing a letter to reduce my working hours as I started part time study along with work. After completing my college I have planned to learn new language French and I started my classes from upcoming weeks.

I would like to work in the evening or overnight shifts. Because In the morning time from 11 am to 3 pm I have my classes. So I think either evening time or overnight would be better, as I feel relax between these 2 hours. After that I can proper concentrate on my work without ant tiredness.

I think French language would be beneficial for me not only on my workplace but also communicate with other culture people. With the help of this langauge I can easily know other culture people demand which types of things they want. Moreover, I can use different types of techniques to increase the productivity of the organisations.

I appreciated to you as you understand my situation and reduce my working hours. I think my this decision is very helpful for me to chosse my better career options.

Yours Faithfully,

Qwerty

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three requested points: you explain that you want to study French, identify evening or overnight work as your preference, and describe possible benefits to the organisation. The employer-focused point is relevant, especially your suggestion that language skills could help you understand customers from other cultures and improve productivity. However, the reason for studying is only briefly explained, and the proposed schedule is not fully clear: you give class hours of 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. but do not specify the exact working hours or days you are requesting. The closing also focuses more on your career than on a practical arrangement. More precise details and fuller support would make the request more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement, with separate paragraphs for your reason, preferred shifts, benefits to the employer, and closing. This makes the main points easy to locate, and phrases such as “Moreover” help signal an additional benefit. Some connections are less clear or mechanical, however. “Because In the morning time…” is an incomplete sentence, while “between these 2 hours” does not clearly refer to a time period. The final paragraph also moves abruptly from thanking the manager to discussing your career options. Use complete sentences, make references explicit, and connect the request and its benefits more smoothly to strengthen the progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the situation, including “part time study,” “overnight shifts,” “beneficial,” and “productivity,” and the reader can generally understand your intended meaning. There is some attempt to use less common language, particularly when discussing communication with people from other cultures. However, several word choices, collocations, and spelling errors reduce precision: “feel relax,” “other culture people,” “ant tiredness,” and “langauge” are examples. “Reduce my working hours” is appropriate, but the letter would benefit from more natural workplace expressions such as requesting a revised schedule or explaining how language skills could support customer communication. Check spelling and choose standard collocations to make the message more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the explanation beginning “as I feel…” and the sentence about how French could benefit the workplace. The overall meaning is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. For example, “I started part time study” needs an article or a different construction, and “Because In the morning time…” is a sentence fragment with inconsistent capitalisation. In “I can easily know,” the verb pattern is not suitable for the intended meaning, while “I appreciated to you” has an incorrect structure. Practise complete subordinate clauses, verb forms, and sentence patterns for requests; proofreading punctuation and capital letters will also help.
