Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manuel,

I am writing this letter to request to reduce my working hours in your organisation for 6 months.

I would like to switch from full time to part time employer for couple of months. As i have enrolled in Business Management course in NSCC. Moreover, my classes will start from next month Monday to Friday. I would like to devote same energy and productivity towards work with being a part timer. And rest of the day, i can study and focus on my exams.

Effective from September 01, i can work Monday to Friday after 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM. I would prefer to have up to 20 hours only.

Furthermore, my skills in this course related with finance and accounting and hands-on experience will be beneficial for the company. i would also like to share my knowledge with other co-workers to support the sales of the business.

I would request you to consider my request.

Thank you for your support and guidance.

Yours faithfully,

Samridhi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three required points: you explain that you have enrolled in a Business Management course, specify a proposed schedule from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on weekdays, and describe possible benefits through finance and accounting skills and sharing knowledge with colleagues. The request is clear and the tone is generally appropriate. Some points, however, are less fully developed: the study-related reason could explain more specifically why the course requires reduced hours, and the employer benefits are asserted rather than illustrated with a concrete example. There is also some uncertainty about the requested period, since you mention six months and then “a couple of months.” Clarifying this would make the proposal more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information is arranged in a sensible order: you introduce the request, explain your studies, give your preferred hours, and then discuss benefits to the company. Paragraphing helps distinguish these points, and expressions such as “Moreover” and “Furthermore” signal additions. At times, however, the links feel mechanical or the relationship between ideas is unclear. For example, “And rest of the day” does not connect smoothly to the preceding sentence, while “Effective from September 01” would be clearer as part of a complete sentence explaining when the schedule begins. The shift between six months and a couple of months also interrupts the progression. Use more natural transitions and make each paragraph’s purpose explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “working hours,” “Business Management course,” “finance and accounting,” and “co-workers,” so the main message is understandable. There are also attempts at more specific workplace language, such as “productivity” and “hands-on experience.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “part time employer” and “devote same energy and productivity towards work with being a part timer.” These choices make parts of the letter less clear and limit the precision of your vocabulary. Aim for natural phrases such as “work part-time,” “maintain my productivity,” and “apply the skills I gain.” Check capitalization and spelling conventions as well, including “I” and “part-time.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes both simple statements and attempts at longer sentences, for example the explanation beginning “As I have enrolled…” and the sentence about your skills benefiting the company. The intended meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. “I am writing this letter to request to reduce” uses an awkward verb pattern; “As I have enrolled…” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence; and “I would like to devote same energy” is missing an article. The sentence beginning “Effective from September 01” also lacks a clear subject and verb. Capitalisation of “I” is inconsistent, and punctuation around sentence boundaries needs attention. Build complex sentences with a complete main clause and check articles, verb patterns, and sentence completeness.
