Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to request you for reducing my work time in order to purse a parttime study.
I have recently enrolled in a part time course to get a red seal licence as a Carpenter. It is very difficult to do full time work with the study. so the reducing working hours allow me to do the study while working in your company.
My class will start at 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM Monday to Thursday, So on this days I am able to come 9:30 AM and Firday I will come on same time. This schedule help me to maintain the balance in work and study.
This course will benefit your Company also because obtaining a red sealed licence will that your employees meet the national trade standard. Learning about advance tecgnology and safety training from this course will allow me to do work faster and complex tasks easily.
I will be very thankfull if you consider my request.
Your Faithfull

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three requested points and maintain a clear, polite purpose: you explain that your carpentry course is difficult to combine with full-time work, specify a later start on class days, and describe benefits such as meeting trade standards and improving safety and efficiency. These relevant details support the request and make the letter purposeful. The proposed schedule could be stated more precisely, however: “on this days” and “Firday I will come on same time” leave the exact working hours on Friday unclear, and you do not explicitly say when your workday would end. Develop this practical detail and make the employer benefit more specific to your role to strengthen an already complete response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall progression: request and reason, proposed schedule, employer benefits, then a courteous closing. Separate paragraphs help the reader identify each part of the message, and links such as “because” and “also” show how the ideas relate. This is a coherent arrangement, though some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “So on this days” does not clearly connect the class timetable to the proposed work hours, and the schedule sentence combines several details without clear punctuation. Use a direct transition such as “Therefore, I would like to start work at 9:30 a.m. from Monday to Thursday” and give Friday’s hours in a separate, clearly linked sentence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “part time course,” “red seal licence,” “national trade standard,” and “safety training,” which helps communicate the subject and potential workplace benefits. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the message less clear, as in “purse” for “pursue,” “red sealed licence,” and “advance tecgnology.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “request you for reducing my work time” and “do work faster.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise expressions such as “request a reduction in my working hours” and “complete complex tasks more efficiently” would make the letter sound more professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, including a reason clause (“because obtaining a red sealed licence…”) and a sentence explaining how the course could help your work. The main ideas remain understandable, but errors in sentence construction and agreement are frequent enough to affect clarity. For example, “the reducing working hours allow me” needs a clearer subject and verb form, while “This schedule help” should have subject–verb agreement. The timetable sentence also joins clauses with a comma and uses unclear time references. Practise building accurate sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check articles, agreement, and punctuation before submitting.
