Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr Chauhan,
I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Jasmeen Kaur working as a retail store supervisor at your gas station. I am writing to request you to reduce my working hours to 25 hours weekly as currently I am working more than 30 hours a week. Moreover, my given availablity is full-time which I would like to reduce to part-time because I have started pursuing my studies on side.
Therefore, to focus on my studies and to attend classes in the evening I cannot do any evening shifts from the next two weeks. I have taken up the post graduate accounting program from the University of Victoria which I really wanted to do from a long time. Also,in next semester, I finally got an admission in the school I am so excited about it.
I have waited for this opportunity for a while as other colleges charge high fees for the same course. Hence, only highly intelligent students got a chance to enroll into Business Studies department in University of Victoria. Moreover, In future I would like to work as an accountant for you and you always encouraged me to pursue this field.I hope you will provide me your valuable guidance and support during this time. In addition, I will make sure that I will continuosly work hard in fulfilling our company obilgations with honesty.
I look forward to hearing from you soon!
Yours sincerely,
Jasmeen

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three requested points: you explain that your studies require time, request a 25-hour week, and describe a possible future benefit by saying you would like to work as an accountant for the employer. The request is understandable, but the proposed schedule is not fully clear: you say you cannot work evening shifts, without specifying which hours or days you would prefer instead. The benefit to the employer is also less developed than the explanation of your studies; clarify how accounting knowledge could help the business in practical terms. Some details about admission and college fees distract from the main request. A more focused explanation of your preferred shifts and workplace contribution would make the letter more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a recognisable structure, with an opening request, reasons for studying, and a closing expression of hope for support. Paragraphing helps separate the main points, and connectors such as “Therefore,” “Moreover,” and “Hence” show attempts to link ideas. However, some links feel mechanical or do not express the relationship clearly. For example, “Hence” introduces a claim about highly intelligent students that does not clearly follow from the high fees at other colleges. The second paragraph also moves from evening classes to admission details without a smooth progression. Keep each paragraph focused on one purpose and use clearer references and transitions to connect the schedule request, study plans, and employer benefit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal workplace letter, including “request,” “pursuing my studies,” “post graduate accounting program,” and “guidance and support.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the tone is generally appropriate. There are, however, some spelling and word-choice problems, such as “availablity,” “continuosly,” and “obilgations.” A few phrases are also unnatural or imprecise: “studies on side” and “got an admission” do not sound idiomatic, while “highly intelligent students got a chance” is an awkward way to describe selective admission. Choose more natural collocations and proofread spelling; this will make your message sound more fluent and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “as,” and “which,” and the reader can generally understand your request. Some grammatical errors remain. The opening fragment, “My name is Jasmeen Kaur working as a retail store supervisor,” needs a relative clause or a separate sentence. In “I would like to reduce to part-time because I have started pursuing,” the structure is incomplete or unclear, and “I have waited for this opportunity for a while as other colleges charge high fees” has an unclear tense relationship. There are also punctuation and spacing issues, such as “Also,in” and missing spaces after full stops. Review sentence completeness, verb forms, and punctuation while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
