Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Boss,

I hope you are doing well and are in good spirits! I am writing to seek your permission to cut my working hours as I enrolled myself into a part time study course for two months and which definately be beneficial for our department.

As you know, I am already very keen towards implementing new things to prevent defects into our softwares. So I have choosen this course that helped me to learn more ways, how to prevent any security threats and breach of confidental data. Although this is not only helpful for our department but for the overall organisation.

I would appreciate if you could help me to manage my shift timings to evening and reduce the minimum hours for these 2 months. I have choosen this shift timings as more people available from networking and data administration team. I can reach out to them for queries and discussion such as tools and methods which are more efficient for this initiative.

I am already from a Quality Assurance team, and this initiate are not only helpful for our new apperiantances but for the existing experienced QA members. Most of them doing their work well to finding defects and resolving before any releases. However, this skill helped them to stay one step ahead of any other organization QA team.

I really be very thankful for you to give me an opportunity to learn more about this course and implement such things in our organization and lead other team members.

I am looking forward to hear from you positive response.

Yours sincerely,

Aashima

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you explain that you want to study a course, request reduced hours, and describe possible benefits to the QA team and organisation. The examples about learning to prevent security threats and sharing methods with colleagues make the purpose relevant. The request is less fully specified, however: “shift timings to evening” does not state the exact hours or clearly say how many hours you wish to reduce. The employer benefit is also somewhat general, particularly the claim that the skill will keep the team “one step ahead” without explaining a specific improvement to work outcomes. The letter is therefore purposeful and covers the task, but clearer working-hour details and more developed benefits would strengthen it.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce the request, explain your study choice, discuss the proposed shift, and then describe benefits to the team. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages. Some links between ideas are less clear, though. For example, “Although this is not only helpful…” is an incomplete contrast, and the paragraph about experienced QA members moves from their current work to a broad claim about staying ahead without making the connection explicit. The repeated use of “So,” “Although,” and “However” sometimes feels mechanical or does not express the intended relationship. Use more precise transitions and make each paragraph develop one main point in a clear sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant workplace and study vocabulary, including “security threats,” “confidential data,” “Quality Assurance,” and “data administration team,” which helps communicate the subject of your course. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “implementing new things” and “prevent defects,” but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural and reduce precision. Examples include “keen towards,” “breach of confidental data,” and “new apperiantances”; spelling errors such as “definately” and “choosen” also affect the impression of control. Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling, especially in key terms. A more precise vocabulary range would make your professional purpose and proposed contribution clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “as,” “although,” and “which,” and the overall meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in verb forms, sentence construction, and agreement. For example, “I enrolled myself into a part time study course … and which … be beneficial” does not form a correct clause, while “I really be very thankful” needs a correctly formed verb phrase. In “Most of them doing their work well,” the main verb is missing, and “I would appreciate if” omits the expected “it.” Work on building complete clauses and checking verb forms and agreement. More accurate complex sentences would improve control without sacrificing the range you are attempting.
