Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sam,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I have enrolled myself in part time course and would like to update my working schedule.

I been thinking to upgrade my working skillset in order to get better job in future so I have enrolled in part time couse in Niagara college from next week. The classes are mostly on weekdays in morning till afternoon and the college is way far from my place.

Currently, I have been doing morning shifts from 6 am to 2 pm on weekdays and would like to change my schedule from 3 pm till 9pm. I am also open for closing shifts aswell.

I had a conversation with colleague who works in afternoon shifts and agreed on switching to morning shifts, If that somthing would benefit you make changes on schedule. Besides, I can work in rush hours to help my team.

I would highly appreciate, If you could take my request in considration as soon as possible.

Yours sincerly,

Dhruv

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you explain that you have enrolled in a course to improve your skills, propose working from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., and mention possible benefits such as covering rush hours and helping your team. The request is clear and the tone is generally appropriate for writing to a manager. However, the reason for studying is not fully explained, and the benefit to the employer is only briefly stated; for example, “help my team” could be linked to a specific skill or workplace outcome from your course. The proposed shift arrangement could also be made more precise, including which days you can work. Developing these points would make the letter more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce your request, explain your course, state your preferred hours, and close politely. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and phrases such as “Besides” signal an additional benefit. Some connections are less clear, however. The sentence about speaking with a colleague and switching shifts is difficult to follow, particularly “If that something would benefit you make changes on schedule.” The relationship between your current morning shifts, the colleague’s agreement, and your proposed afternoon hours needs to be stated directly. Use clearer linking and reference, and ensure each paragraph develops one point without an unclear sentence interrupting the progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a suitable range of workplace and study vocabulary, including “working schedule,” “part time course,” “morning shifts,” and “closing shifts.” These choices make the main request understandable, and “rush hours” is relevant to the employer’s needs. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal, such as “upgrade my working skillset,” “way far from my place,” and “open for closing shifts.” Spelling errors in “couse,” “somthing,” and “considration,” along with “aswell” and “sincerly,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural professional phrasing and check spelling carefully; this would make your vocabulary more precise and polished.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “in order to” and a sentence beginning “Besides.” The overall meaning is usually clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “I been thinking” needs an auxiliary (“I have been thinking”), while “I have enrolled myself in part time course” needs an article and clearer course phrasing. The sentence beginning “I had a conversation with colleague” also has article and clause-structure problems, and its final conditional clause is incomplete. Review auxiliary verbs, articles, and complete sentence construction, especially when combining several ideas. More accurate control of these structures would improve the letter’s fluency.
