Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to reduce my working hours in order to study part- time.

Firstly, the reason that I want to reduce my working time is that you know that I am a student and I am on my term break . Due to this, I am doing the full time job in your warehouse but after one week my classes will start agai n regulary as I will only be able to work part-time.

Furthermore, I will be free on weekends so I preffered work at evening time. From saturday to Sunday between 4pm to 11pm. Also, if I wll have any holidays during my classes I will let you know and I will came to work.

Finally, my studies will provide you numerous benefits like I am doing studies about retail and I future I will learn new strategies which provide various benefits to us in future.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Sukhpreet kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you explain that classes are restarting, specify weekend evening hours, and describe how retail studies could help the warehouse. The request is understandable, and the letter has an appropriate opening and closing. However, some points are less fully developed than others. The proposed schedule, “From saturday to Sunday between 4pm to 11pm,” is not entirely clear about whether these hours apply on both days, and the benefit to the employer remains general: “new strategies” is not explained or linked to a practical workplace improvement. Clarify the exact days and hours, and give a specific example of how your learning could help the employer.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: you explain your reason, state your preferred schedule, then discuss the benefit to your employer. Paragraphing and signposting with “Firstly,” “Furthermore,” and “Finally” help the reader follow these stages. However, the linking is somewhat mechanical, and some connections between ideas are unclear. For example, “Due to this” does not clearly show how being on a term break relates to your classes restarting, while “Also” introduces holiday availability without explaining how it fits the proposed schedule. The final paragraph also moves quickly from studying retail to future benefits. Use more precise links and make the relationship between each point explicit to improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “term break,” “part-time,” “warehouse,” and “retail,” and you attempt more specific language such as “new strategies.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “reduce my working time,” “preffered work,” and “provide you numerous benefits.” Spelling errors such as “regulary,” “saturday,” and “wll” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your purpose, but they limit the precision and naturalness of the letter. Aim for standard workplace expressions, check spelling carefully, and choose verbs that fit their objects, such as “apply” or “introduce” strategies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple sentences and longer structures, including the reason clause beginning “The reason that I want to reduce…” and the conditional idea “if I … have any holidays.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “I will came to work” uses an incorrect verb form, and “From Saturday to Sunday between 4pm to 11pm” is a sentence fragment with an unclear preposition pattern. The sentence about future strategies also has an unclear clause structure: “which provide various benefits.” Improve control of verb forms, sentence boundaries, and clause construction, while continuing to use a range of sentence types.
