Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing a letter to inform you that I would like to reduce my working hours, since I am planning pursuing a business analysis part-time course.

I would like to reduce my working hours mainly due to the consequences in dealing with responsibilities. I might find it difficult to submit my assignments and projects on time. Moreover, If I work a lot it would be stressful as well as it would affect my productivity level as the timings of the lectures are mostly in evening.

I can work weekends. I would try to complete my tasks early before the week ends. but mostly due to lectures, to work in the week days seems impossible for me to continue.

Without any qualms, this part time course would help me better later at work. However, it covers buisness management and inventory analysis topics which directly contributes to boost and foster my skills.

Thanks

your's faithfully,

hets

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you explain that you want to study business analysis, propose working weekends, and describe how the course could strengthen skills relevant to your job. The benefit to the employer is relevant, especially your reference to business management and inventory analysis, but it is not fully explained—for example, you could show how these skills would improve a specific work process. Your reason for reducing hours is also somewhat unclear: the discussion of assignments and lecture times explains the practical difficulty, but the opening phrase about “the consequences in dealing with responsibilities” does not clearly state your main motivation. Develop these points and make the request more specific to present a clearer, more fully supported letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it opens with the request, gives reasons, proposes a schedule, and then explains the course’s potential value. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and connectors such as “Moreover” and “However” show attempts to link ideas. Some links are less effective or mechanical, though. “However” introduces a benefit that does not contrast clearly with the previous point, while “but mostly due to lectures” creates an awkward shift in the schedule paragraph. The relationship between weekend availability and your intention to finish tasks before the week ends could also be clearer. Use transitions that express the precise relationship between ideas, and connect the proposed hours directly to your lecture schedule.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a workplace letter, including relevant terms such as “assignments,” “productivity,” “business management,” and “inventory analysis.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “Without any qualms” and “foster my skills,” but these are not natural in this context. Some word choices and spelling errors reduce precision, including “consequences in dealing with responsibilities,” “buisness,” and “timings of the lectures.” Aim for straightforward, natural professional language rather than formal-sounding phrases that do not fit the meaning. More precise vocabulary for the course’s practical benefits would also help explain how your new knowledge could contribute to the employer’s work.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “since,” “as,” and “which,” and the main message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, however. “I am planning pursuing” needs a verb form such as “planning to pursue,” and “the timings of the lectures are mostly in evening” has an article and phrasing problem. In “I would try to complete my tasks early before the week ends. but mostly…,” the sentence boundary and capitalisation are faulty, and the following clause is incomplete. The closing also needs correct capitalisation and possessive form. Review verb patterns, articles, and sentence boundaries, then proofread punctuation and capital letters to make your varied sentence structures more controlled.
