Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manager,

I am writing to request you for swithiching my position to part time.

The reasoan is that I have endrolled in one of the bachelor degree program. I have clasees every week days, however, i am available evening but I will have to complete my assienments. I do not want to disappoint you to not showing up on the shifts. In order to jusitify my study, I would like to cut down my weekly working hours. Starting from next january 2027.

However, my new availbility will be every weekends and every friday evening. If you want, I can do accept some shift besides my new schedual but please inform me in advance.

Additionally, I am going to pursue bachelor's in Electrical engineering and my position is already helping the real engineer. In the future, I will be really helpful, if I have a degree.

Please let me know, if you have any confusion or questions.

Yours Faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you explain that your bachelor’s studies require a change, specify weekend and Friday-evening availability, and describe how an electrical-engineering qualification could help your employer. The request is clear, and the letter has an appropriate opening and closing. However, the benefit to the employer is only briefly stated in “I will be really helpful, if I have a degree”; explain more specifically how your studies would improve your current work or contribute to the team. The reason for reducing hours is also somewhat unclear because you mention weekday classes and evening availability without explaining how the proposed schedule fits your study commitments. Developing these points would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, with the request and reason first, your preferred schedule next, and the potential benefit to the employer afterwards. This gives the reader a coherent overall progression, and linking expressions such as “Additionally” help signal a new point. Some connections are less smooth: “Starting from next january 2027” is separated from the sentence it completes, while “However” does not clearly introduce a contrast before your availability. The final paragraph also moves quickly from your current position to a future benefit. Connect these ideas more explicitly and integrate sentence fragments into complete sentences. Your organisation is already clear, but more natural transitions and clearer references would make the flow more polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “reduce my working hours,” “available,” “shifts,” and “Electrical engineering,” so the main message can be understood. However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors make the letter less precise, such as “swithiching,” “assienments,” and “schedual.” Some phrases are also unnatural or unclear: “request you for switching my position to part time” and “justify my study” do not express the request idiomatically. Choose standard workplace expressions and check spelling carefully. For example, “request a reduction in my working hours” and “accommodate my studies” would communicate your meaning more naturally and professionally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including “If you want, I can do accept some shift besides my new schedual but please inform me in advance.” The main ideas are generally understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. For instance, “I have endrolled in one of the bachelor degree program” has problems with the verb form and singular/plural agreement, and “I do not want to disappoint you to not showing up” uses an incorrect verb pattern. The sentence beginning “Starting from next january 2027” is incomplete, and punctuation is sometimes missing before a new sentence. Practise accurate verb patterns, articles, and complete sentence construction, while retaining your attempts at longer structures.
