Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

i hope you are doing well. i am writing this letter regards to lessen my job hours, so that i can continue my study.

To begin with, getting better future opportunities i decided to get admission in health care program , this job is not only high peak in demand but also paying good salary. To fulfill my dream I need to partially devide my time between work and study.

Furthermore, I also want to discuss about my availabilty. Our usually shifts start from 7:00 am to 3:00pm and another from 3:00 pm to 11:00 Pm . Unfortunately , both shifts are not suitable along with my study because my study hours from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm during weekdays. if is it possible could you adjust me from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm on weekdays .

It would be beneficial for both of us. In this way, I can continue my study without any distraction and financial crisis. On your side you donot need to give overtime people if you need person only for hours

I am looking forward your response.

Your sincerely,

Puria

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you explain that you want to study a healthcare programme, identify your usual shifts and study hours, and give a reason the arrangement could help your employer. The request is understandable, but the proposed working hours are unclear: “from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm on weekdays” appears to cover the entire day and conflicts with your stated classes from noon to 8 pm. Specify the exact hours you are asking to work, such as 7 am to 11 am. The employer benefit is relevant but underdeveloped; explain more precisely how your availability would cover staffing needs or reduce overtime. A more formal, complete request would also make the purpose of the letter clearer.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: the opening states your purpose, the middle paragraphs explain your studies and schedule, and the final paragraph gives a benefit and closes politely. Connectors such as “To begin with” and “Furthermore” help signal progression, and the main points are generally easy to follow. However, some linking is mechanical, and the relationship between your study hours and requested work hours is difficult to follow because the proposed 7 am–11 pm schedule is not reconciled with classes from noon to 8 pm. The employer-benefit paragraph also shifts abruptly from your personal circumstances to staffing. Use clearer transitions and group the schedule and requested adjustment together, then explain the employer’s benefit in a focused paragraph.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main purpose and relevant details, including “health care program,” “shifts,” “study,” and “overtime.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “financial crisis” and “high peak in demand,” but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural and sometimes make the meaning less clear. For example, “lessen my job hours” is not the usual phrase for this request, while “high peak in demand” and “paying good salary” are awkward collocations. Spelling and word-form errors such as “availabilty” and “devide” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise workplace language and check common collocations; this will make your request sound more natural and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and longer sentences, including explanations with “because” and “so that,” and the reader can generally understand your message. However, errors in sentence structure, articles, verb forms, and punctuation are noticeable. For example, “i am writing this letter regards to lessen” lacks a grammatical connection, and “if is it possible could you adjust me” has an incorrect question structure. The sentence beginning “Unfortunately, both shifts…” also needs a clearer clause structure. Capitalisation is inconsistent, including lowercase “i” and “Pm.” Practise forming polite indirect requests, such as “Would it be possible to adjust my hours…?”, and proofread each sentence for a complete subject and verb.
