Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Parneet,
I am writing this letter to reducing my working hours so that I can persue my part-time studies along with my emplyement.
I have recently enrolled in diploma of business management to enhance my knowledge and skills relevent to my career. However, that would be very challenging to persue my studies with full time working hours. Therefore, I would appericiate it if you reduce my working hours.
Idealy, I would like to work from 8.00am to 2.00pm on Monday to Friday, instead of my current schedule. This working schedule give a sufficient time to do my study and acedemic assignments without affecting my work commitments. Furthermore, I believe this knowledge helps me to uppgrade my skills, which would be beneficial for company as well.
I would be gratefull if you consider my request at your convenice. Thank you for concidering my situation, I would apperciate your efforts.
Best Regards,
Harmanjit Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three required points: you explain that you have enrolled in a business-management diploma, request a specific weekday schedule of 8.00 am to 2.00 pm, and state that the studies could improve your skills for the company. The purpose and request are clear, and the tone is appropriately polite. The benefit to your employer, however, is only briefly asserted in “this knowledge helps me to upgrade my skills”; a concrete link to your role or the company’s work would develop this point more fully. The reason for studying is relevant, but could also be explained in more personal or career-focused detail. This covers the task well overall, while some ideas remain less developed than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: purpose, reason for the request, proposed hours and benefits, then a polite closing. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “However,” “Therefore,” and “Furthermore” help show how the ideas relate. The schedule is easy to locate, and the reader can follow the request without difficulty. Some connections are a little mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “I would” in the request and closing, and “This working schedule” could refer more smoothly to the proposed hours. To strengthen the flow further, vary the transitions and make references between sentences more natural. Overall, the organisation is clear and logical, with cohesion generally effective.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for a workplace request, including “enrolled,” “diploma of business management,” “work commitments,” and “beneficial for company.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the tone is suitably formal. However, spelling errors are noticeable, including “persue,” “emplyement,” “relevent,” “appericiate,” and “convenice.” There are also word-choice and collocation problems: “do my study” is less natural than “study” or “complete my coursework,” while “reduce my working hours” would be clearer as a direct request to “approve a reduced schedule.” The range is adequate for the task, but more accurate spelling and natural workplace collocations would make the language more precise and polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple sentences and more complex forms, such as “However, that would be very challenging…” and “I would be grateful if you consider my request…”. Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors recur. “I am writing this letter to reducing” should use the infinitive “to reduce,” and “This working schedule give” needs subject–verb agreement (“gives”). The phrase “enrolled in diploma” needs an article, and “helps me to upgrade my skills, which would be beneficial” shifts between present and conditional forms without a clear reason. The sentence about having sufficient time also needs a more natural grammatical construction. Greater control of verb patterns, articles, agreement, and tense consistency would improve accuracy while retaining the range attempted.
