IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You would like to reduce your working hours in order to study part time.

Write a letter to your boss. In your letter

  • explain why you want to reduce your working hours
  • say which hours you would like to work
  • describe how your part-time studies would benefit your employer

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Ghalib,

I am writing to make some time duration adjustments to my working hours as I am planning to opt for a part-time course in Robotics and Mechatronics.

This course requires full focus and attention which can only be done by reducing my working hours and most of our teammates are ready to work extra time in order to complete the tasks on time. I would prefer working at night shifts from 18:00 to 23:00 as I would be having morning and afternoon classroom sessions. In addition, I can also switch my shifts with other teammates if required. Moreover, after the completion of my course, I would be able to handle all our company's robotical troubleshootings including programming and A.I.

I hope you consider my request in the earliest possible way. I am looking forward to your positive response.

Yours faithfully,

Harjot

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requested points: you explain that you want to study Robotics and Mechatronics, specify night shifts from 18:00 to 23:00, and describe how the course could help you handle robotics-related work. The request is clear and the letter uses an appropriate formal tone. The benefit to the employer is relevant, although it would be stronger with a more specific link to your current duties or the company’s needs. The explanation that teammates are willing to work extra time also supports your request, but could be clarified to show how the reduced schedule would be managed. The response is six words below the required minimum, so add a little relevant detail to complete the task fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: you state your request, explain the study commitment and proposed schedule, then describe the potential benefit and close politely. Linking phrases such as “In addition” and “Moreover” help connect supporting points, and the paragraphs are easy to follow. The main opportunity is to make the relationship between ideas more explicit. For example, the sentence about teammates working extra time follows the course explanation, but it is not entirely clear how this arrangement would cover your reduced hours. A separate paragraph for the proposed schedule and employer benefit would also make the letter’s structure more deliberate. Overall, the organisation is logical, with some room for more precise linking.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal workplace request, including “part-time course,” “classroom sessions,” “switch my shifts,” and “positive response.” These choices communicate the main points clearly, and terms such as “Robotics and Mechatronics” add useful specificity. Some expressions are less natural or precise, however: “time duration adjustments” is awkward in this context, “robotical troubleshootings” is not idiomatic, and “in the earliest possible way” is an unnatural collocation. This keeps the vocabulary from showing consistently flexible and accurate control. Aim for conventional workplace phrasing and check collocations, especially when using technical vocabulary; this will make your message sound more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a mix of sentence forms, including complex clauses such as “as I am planning to opt for a part-time course” and “as I would be having morning and afternoon classroom sessions.” Most sentences are understandable, and the request remains clear throughout. There are a few grammatical choices to refine. In “This course requires full focus and attention which can only be done by reducing my working hours,” the relative clause does not attach clearly to the intended idea; restructuring it would improve accuracy. “I would be having” is also less suitable for describing a planned timetable than a simpler future form. Continue using complex sentences, but check clause relationships and choose verb forms that express future arrangements naturally.
