You would like to reduce your working hours in order to study part time.

Write a letter to your boss. In your letter

  • say which hours you would like to work
  • describe how your part-time studies would benefit your employer

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Madam,

I am writing to request a amendement in the working hours. I am wroking in your long-term care home as a Personal Support Worker from last two years. Since the day I got hired, I am having a full-time line on a dementia floor. I was planning to enroll myself in a Practical Nursing and fortunately, my application is accepted by the Sheridan College. Accordingly, my classes would be initiated from May 2027 to August 2028. Therefore, I plead you to give me any available permanent part-time line and with this retrive me from ongoing full-time line.

Moving to suitable shift, I could either opt the afternoon shift or the night shift. As my classes will be in the morning and I would be available after 3'0 clock in the afternoon.

Once I would get my nursing license in 2028, I would apply in your company for the similar post. Undoubtedly, our workplace is always short of nurses which cost the company by giving overtime to registered staff. Additionally, I would continue working as a Personal Support Worker as a casul basis. Conclusively, to some extent the shortage problem of staff would be sort out.

I am eagerly looking for your response.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours Sincerely,

Kim

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requested points and maintain a clear, polite request throughout. The reason for studying is specific: you have been accepted into Practical Nursing at Sheridan College, with classes beginning in May 2027. You also propose afternoon or night shifts and explain that nursing qualifications could help address the employer’s shortage of nurses, while you could continue as a casual support worker. These ideas are relevant and supported, although the proposed schedule could be more precise: “after 3 o’clock” does not clarify which shift you prefer or how many hours you can work. Develop the employer benefit further by explaining how your training would improve care or support the team.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: you explain your circumstances and request a change, describe possible shifts, then outline benefits to the employer before closing politely. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and transitions such as “Moving to suitable shift” and “Additionally” signal relationships between ideas. The overall organisation is clear, though a few links feel mechanical or awkward, particularly “Accordingly” and “Conclusively.” The shift paragraph is also brief and could connect your class timetable more directly to your preferred working hours. Use straightforward transitions and make the request, availability, and employer benefit flow together more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes relevant workplace and study terms such as “full-time line,” “Practical Nursing,” “registered staff,” and “casual basis.” You also attempt more formal expressions, including “request” and “consideration.” However, several inaccurate word choices, collocations, and spelling errors reduce precision: “amendement,” “retrive,” “casul,” and “sort out” do not fit the intended meaning or register. Phrases such as “classes would be initiated” and “short of nurses which cost the company” are also unnatural. Choose conventional workplace language and check spelling; this will make your request sound more fluent and professional without changing its meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a conditional idea about applying for a nursing post after qualification and a reason introduced by “Since.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in sentence patterns, verb forms, articles, and punctuation. For example, “I am having a full-time line” is not an appropriate tense for describing your current position, while “I could either opt the afternoon shift” is missing a grammatical element after “opt.” The sentence beginning “As my classes will be in the morning” is a fragment, and “Once I would get” uses an unsuitable verb form. Practise complete clauses and accurate tense patterns, especially in time and conditional sentences.
