Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to inform you that I am going to start my school to complete my masters in Computer science as a part-time student. I would like to request you to reduce my working hours.
I want to alter the working hours because I have to focus on my study to complete my master's degree. If I work full-time, five days a week, I will be run out of time to concentrate my studies. During the academic period, I have to do some assignments and complete projects in my field. So, I believe it needs time to do the research.
I want to change my schedule to minimize two hours from Monday to Wednesday. I have classes on those days in the eveening, so I would like to sign off early to attend my classes.
I believe that if I get this opportunity, it will be beneficial for me and my employer in many ways. As a Data Analyst, I can contribute better to my companies to grow their buisness in analystical fields.
I am lokking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
robin D

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three requested points: you explain that you need time for your master’s studies, request a schedule change, and mention a possible benefit to the employer. The request to finish earlier on Monday to Wednesday is reasonably specific. However, the reason for studying is explained more fully than the employer benefit, which remains general: “contribute better” and help the company “grow their business” do not show clearly how your new skills would be applied. Develop this by naming relevant skills or tasks, such as producing more accurate analysis or supporting data-led decisions. Also clarify the exact start and finish times, since “minimize two hours” does not make the proposed schedule fully clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: the opening states the purpose, the following paragraphs explain your reason and preferred schedule, and the final paragraph describes a potential benefit before closing. This makes the message easy to follow. Paragraphing is appropriate, and links such as “because,” “So,” and “As a Data Analyst” help connect ideas. Some connections are a little mechanical, however, and the benefit paragraph moves quickly from your studies to the company’s growth without explaining the link. Use a clearer transition and develop that connection. The closing is suitable, though the letter would feel more cohesive if the requested hours were stated precisely and then referred to consistently.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “part-time student,” “master’s degree,” “assignments,” “projects,” and “Data Analyst.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and you attempt some more specific language related to your field. However, several word-choice and spelling problems reduce precision: “run out of time to concentrate my studies,” “minimize two hours,” “eveening,” “buisness,” “analystical,” and “lokking.” Some phrases also sound unnatural, such as “start my school” and “sign off early” in this formal request. Aim for accurate collocations and proofread spelling; more precise professional vocabulary would make the request and its benefits clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes a mix of simple and complex forms, such as “If I work full-time…,” “because I have to focus…,” and “I believe that if I get this opportunity…”. Most sentences communicate their meaning, and the conditional structure is a useful attempt to explain consequences. Some grammatical errors remain. For example, write “I will run out of time” rather than “I will be run out of time,” and use “concentrate on my studies” rather than “concentrate my studies.” “I want to alter the working hours” would be clearer as “I would like to alter my working hours.” Review verb patterns, prepositions, and article use, while continuing to practise complex sentences.
