IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You would like to reduce your working hours in order to study part time.
Write a letter to your boss. In your letter
- explain why you want to reduce your working hours
- say which hours you would like to work
- describe how your part-time studies would benefit your employer
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The intent of this letter today is to request a reduction in my working hours due my part time study initiating january 6th 2027. This course is about mother-board level repair of electronic gadgets.
Talking about my availability, I would like to work 24 hours a week including weekends. This course includes practical knowledge and the instructors want me to be present in all the lectures, therefore, I cannot work on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for the period of two months.
This chip-level repair course enables me to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair the phones and tablets which we are refusing to work on in our company. It will help me to enhance my career opportunities while increasing our company's turnover. I will become a certified technician and can train our other employees in the Blackapple Cellular organisation.
I hope you would support me in this course by allowing me to work part time during my study of 2 months. I would love to hear from you and let me know if you have any queries.
Yours faithfully
Sargun

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a clear, polite request. You explain that your course begins on 6 January and requires attendance, specify a 24-hour working week and identify the days you cannot work, then connect the training to services the company currently declines and to training colleagues. These relevant details support your case. The employer benefit is particularly persuasive, although the claim that the course will increase turnover could be explained more specifically, and the proposed schedule would be clearer if you stated the exact days or hours you are available. A more conventional opening and a direct request for approval would also make the purpose immediately clear and fully polished.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear progression: the reason for writing, your availability, the benefits to the company, and a closing request. Paragraphing separates these functions effectively, and links such as “therefore” and “while” help show relationships between ideas. The reader can follow the argument without difficulty. To make the organisation more natural and cohesive, use a standard opening sentence before explaining the course, and connect the schedule more explicitly to the two-month study period. The final sentence, “I would love to hear from you and let me know if you have any queries,” combines two different requests awkwardly; separating them would create a smoother, more professional close.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a useful range of task-related vocabulary, including “diagnose,” “troubleshoot,” “certified technician,” and “turnover,” which helps explain the practical value of your studies. The technical terms make the letter specific, and the meaning remains clear. Some choices are less natural or precise in a formal workplace letter: “The intent of this letter today” sounds overly elaborate, while “mother-board level repair” and “chip-level repair course” are not used consistently. “Enhance my career opportunities” is also less direct than the intended benefit to the employer. More natural collocations and consistent terminology would strengthen precision and style while retaining the relevant technical detail.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “therefore” and a sentence explaining how the course will benefit the company. Most ideas are understandable, and errors do not prevent the reader from following your request. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however. In “due my part time study initiating,” the construction needs a preposition and a clearer clause, such as “because I will be starting part-time studies.” “I would love to hear from you and let me know” shifts the subject awkwardly; use “I would love to hear from you, so please let me know…” Also check sentence boundaries and punctuation, particularly the opening, and use consistent capitalisation for weekdays and the course start date.
