Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to raise a formal request to reduce my working hours. I am planning to study HVAC technician program to increase my understanding in the products that we manufactured. It has been 2 years working as a quality control inspector in our company and now I am planning to uplift my skills.

Currently, I am working in the afternoon shift from 3.30 tp 11.30 pm. However, due to lectures at college, I would be available from 5.30 to 11.30 pm. Would you please consider my request to adjust working hours for next 4 months.

This program is essential to me as I am planning to work in the motor mount department where hands-on experience with wiring is must. This course will also improve my understanding in different electrical and mechanical functions. If I would able to learn it, I could be a great asset for the company in the future.

Could you please approve my request? I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you

Kind regards,

Vaibhav

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you explain that you want to study an HVAC technician programme, specify a proposed shift of 5.30 to 11.30 pm for four months, and describe how the course could help you contribute to the motor mount department. The purpose and request are clear, and the link between your studies and the company is relevant. To make the response more fully developed, explain more specifically how the new knowledge would benefit your employer—for example, by improving inspection of electrical components or supporting production quality. The benefit is currently expressed mainly as a general prediction that you could become “a great asset,” so this part is less developed than your explanation of why you want to study.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: you introduce the request, explain your current shift and preferred hours, then discuss the course and its potential value to the company. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “However” and “This course will also” help connect the ideas. The opening and closing are appropriate for a formal workplace letter. To strengthen cohesion further, make the relationship between your college lectures and the proposed 5.30 pm start explicit; the reader can infer it, but a direct explanation would make the transition smoother. You could also connect the final benefit more closely to your employer’s needs rather than ending with a broad claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the purpose, including relevant terms such as “quality control inspector,” “hands-on experience,” and “electrical and mechanical functions.” These help communicate your role and study plans. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural choices and collocations, such as “raise a formal request,” “increase my understanding in,” and “uplift my skills.” The typo “tp” also affects spelling accuracy. Choose more natural workplace expressions and check spelling carefully; for example, “submit a formal request,” “improve my understanding of,” and “develop my skills” would fit the context better. Greater precision in describing the practical benefit to the company would also broaden your vocabulary use.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and the meaning remains clear throughout. For instance, “If I would able to learn it, I could be a great asset” attempts a conditional structure, while the request is also expressed politely through “Would you please consider…”. Some grammatical errors remain. In the conditional, use “If I were able to learn these skills, I could…”; “would” is not needed in the if-clause, and “be” is missing. Other examples include “study HVAC technician program” (which needs an article) and “wiring is must” (which needs “a must” or a rephrasing). Review articles and conditional forms to improve accuracy.
