Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I want to express that I am going enroll myself in part time studies. Therefore, I want to choose less hours of work.
I am going to study in skilled trades as welder. The duration of this course is two months. Although I work as welder in your company, it would teach me more enhanced skills in welding: gas welding, tig welding, and pipe welding.
My classe are on Monday and Wednesday. Par consequent, I am not able to come on these two days for next two months. After completing my course, I will return to regular schedule.
This course is mix of theortical and practical knowledge of welding. It will polish and teach new skills to certain level, and undoubtedly, this would bring more perfection in my work. By reducing my hours, it would allow me to focus more on my study and work.
I think you would consider this. Thank you in advance.
Yours sincerely,
Sachin Paul.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points and maintain a polite, relevant tone. The reason for studying is clear, and you explain that the course will develop welding skills that could improve your work. However, the requested working hours are not stated precisely: saying you cannot come on Monday and Wednesday explains your availability, but you should specify the days and hours you can work. The employer benefit is relevant but somewhat general; “bring more perfection in my work” would be stronger if you explained how particular new skills could improve the quality or range of work you complete. Clarifying the proposed schedule and developing this benefit would make the request more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce the request, explain the course, give its schedule, and describe its potential benefit before closing politely. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and links such as “Therefore,” “Although,” and “After completing my course” show an attempt to connect ideas. To make the progression more natural, state your proposed work schedule directly after explaining the class days, rather than leaving the reader to infer it. Some links are also mechanical or unclear, particularly “By reducing my hours, it would allow me,” where the reference of “it” is uncertain. More direct transitions and clearer references would strengthen the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including relevant terms such as “skilled trades,” “gas welding,” “TIG welding,” and “theoretical and practical knowledge.” These details make the subject of your studies clear. You also attempt less common expressions, but some choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “more enhanced skills,” “polish and teach new skills,” and “bring more perfection.” There are spelling errors in “classe” and “theortical,” and “Par consequent” is an unnecessary French expression in an English letter. Choose more natural collocations, such as “develop advanced welding skills” and “improve the quality of my work,” and check spelling and language consistency.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and some more complex forms, including “Although I work as welder in your company, it would teach me…” and “After completing my course, I will return to regular schedule.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in basic patterns. For example, “I am going enroll” needs “to” before the verb, and “as welder” and “to regular schedule” need articles. In “My classe are,” the plural noun and verb do not agree; “My classes are” is correct. The sentence beginning “By reducing my hours” also has an unclear subject. Review infinitives, articles, plurals, and subject–verb agreement, while keeping the useful mix of sentence structures.
