IELTS Writing Task 2 question

More and more people nowadays visit well-known places to take photographs of themselves, without looking at the place.

Why do you think this is happening?

Is it a positive or a negative trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Famous sites are often crowded by enormous number of visitors but most likely they are there to click pictures of themselves rather than exploring the place.

In my opinion due to social media, people are having a feeling of "fear of missing out (FOMO)" so that wherever they go they first post a picture of themselves so that they can let their friends, family members and followers know that they are enjoying their lives by visiting these fancy places.

However, according to me it is a positive trend because people who genuinely wants to update their friends and families about their lives, they can share it through posting images on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat. This way the hidden gem places becomes popular. For Example, a small town called "Elora" became popular due to visitors posting pictures on social media and that way they got revenues and employment in their town. It has some drawbacks as some people just visit the sites to show off or to create fake social status and they don't have any interest in the actual place. But If I give my example, I am living in Canada and my whole family, extended family, friends from school and college they are in India. I miss them and I want to call them and tell them that I am at this amazing site but they are more than hundred in numbers so whenever I post, whatever they feel about me, they can message me or comment in my post.

All in all, people should read the room while taking pictures on their visits to well-known places. They should respect the heritage or artistic value of the site by looking it for a sweet time. Although, taking pictures are important because it will give memories for lifetime whenever they miss that place. Also, it's important for our loved ones so that they get updated by watching our images on social media.

Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the reasons, the evaluation, and the conclusion.

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enormous number of visitors,' 'hidden gem,' and 'artistic value.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'looking it for a sweet time' (which is non-idiomatic) and 'they are more than hundred in numbers' (which should be 'they number more than a hundred'). While you attempt to use some less common vocabulary, the overall range is sufficient but not particularly sophisticated.
